Okay maybe someone who knows more about this can help me out.
I made a 10 GB partition for crunchbang, i also made a 1 gb swap partition. installed via livecd, formatted ext3, designated a "/" partition, blah blah. okay so its done installing, i restart my computer and when it loads up i only see options to load up ubuntu or windows...
whats up? did i do something wrong? it seems to have installed, seeing as the 10 GB partition has stuff in it now.
-
so whats the default boot manager ?
-
ummmmmmmm the one that comes with windows? im not too sure. i know when i was installing crunchbang it installed grub and im pretty sure its grub that loads up when i reboot my computer.
-
did you install it by booting the cd ?
-
yes. i downloaded the iso from the website, booted livecd, installed it from there.
would it have anything to do with the fact that i didnt do a seperate partition install for ubuntu? i just left it at w/e wubi did. -
It probably didn't install grub a second time after it found Ubuntu's grub install. I'm pretty sure you need to edit the grub.conf file (see google for more info, not too familiar with this either) to add the option to boot your crunchbang. Should be pretty straightforward.
-
so ubuntu was sitting on same par. with vista using the windows boot manager.
and now grub is booting but not showing crunchbang ?
maybe it was better (possible?) to install from windows, then it would have updated the boot manager instead of installing grub.
i think you must first be 100% which boot manager is booted, then find out how to update it to see the new install. i dont have such a setup in hand, so just trying to pinpoint how to go about it. -
my guess is that crunchbang hasn't gotten to the point where it's replaced "ubuntu" with "crunchbang" in grub
boot up ubuntu and see if you get crunchbang -
viking1001 we must think alike.
i just did the exact thing you said, then came here to see you posted it
ya and you are right. that is exactly what it was. my question is tho does it matter that it has it listed as "development package" or w/e? -
Nah, i don' think so. Crunchbang is new and under development so that is probably how it lists itself.
-
well TBH, atm, imo, crunchbang should be avoided.
the whole being listed as ubuntu thru me off, but thats understandable so i wont hold that against them. but its supposed to be faster then ubuntu, and it said it had no splash type screen. but for me, it literally took 5 minutes to load up, you know when it goes thru that text type screen that oks everything. then when it loaded up, it could not install my ATI driver, gave me some 404 error =O.
i was interested in CB because they said they were fast. and maybe it is because i did something wrong, but im going back to ubuntu. -
Well, even kubuntu/xubuntu are listed as ubuntu, so your saying avoid them to?
I installed my ATI driver fine, what method did you use?
The first boot is a little long( I very highly doubt its 5 minutes, I need proof), but the others are like 20 seconds.
Honestly I can in no way compare your experiences with mine, and your incompetence of some of these "problems" is astonishing. -
Keep it clean guys, don't degenerate this into personal attacks. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.
-
anyway, since i already partitioned my HD for CB, im gunna play around with other distros now.
as a side note. any one know why i lose "capacity" of my partitions? i.e. i set one partition to 10000 MB, but its capacity is only 9970 MB. Same thing with another partition i set to 1000 MB. its capacity is only 996 MB. -

NBR Mod -
I think I mentioned this but I install the ATI drivers with System --> Administration --> Hardware drivers. With ATI cards you might have to look around a bit for a tweak for your particular card but older ATI stuff works pretty well.
Here are some other distros that have worked well with my old Gateway:
Sabayon 3.5
Wolvix 1.1
Sidux 2008.2
Mint 5
Vector 5.9
DreamLinux
PCLinuxOS
Zenwalk
Mepis
You can go to www.distrowatch.com to read reviews and see which one you want to try next. -
i installed fedora and after that windows(and consequently ubuntu since i used wubi) just would not load w/ grub. after messing with so many things, i finally used the super grub disk, loaded up vista and now i cant access my D partition, it is asking me to format! eeeeeee
anyway, im in the process of deleting-recovering my partition via many of the programs out there to see if that fixes my problem.
EDIT: and my apologizes if i posted anything earlier that was out of line. -
i would of cried if i screwed up my D/C partition. Gotta be more careful from now on
Downloaded ISO..installed...see no option to boot the distro?!
