Hello all I just got my Sager NP2098 delivered from XoticPC woooohooo! So i decided I would like to dual boot my system with ubuntu 9.04 and windows 7 RC (both 64bit). I was wondering if someone could give me a step by step. I just don't want to mess up my new laptop hehe. Thanks so much.

Google is your friend. Always search there before posting here so that we can spend more time helping you and less time Googling for you.

i did i already made both cd's but everywhere i check talks about the beta version of windows and talks about tweaks and whatnot and im not too tech savy.

i could have missed something or googled the wrong thing, so if you could just give me the link it would be good also.

The fact that it's Windows 7 shouldn't matter. A dual-booting guide for Windows 98 should work fine. Your only issue is getting Ubuntu installed. If it doesn't autodetect your Windows install, then it won't be an issue for us to write a grub/menu.lst for you that will let you boot your Windows.

first thing you want is to install Win7, and leave a partition free for Ubuntu to install SECOND....Ubuntu is very good at recognizing windows installations and will set up GRUB properly for you to dual boot.

It's pretty easy just as everyone here just said. Install win7, then boot the ubuntu live cd and when installing choose ' advanced' specify partitions to use so it doesn't overwrite the win7 or factory recovery partitions. If you have a factory recovery partition, I would take care not to overwrite it.
With that said, I just did a fresh install of win7 / ubuntu about a month ago. I've been wiping the linux partition and installing / trying out different distro's though. I went slightly more advanced and manually setup multiple partitions like this:
(320gb drive) | win7 150gb ntfs | 130gb /home ext3 | 10gb / (root) ext3 | 8gb swap |
I did this by using a new hdd, booting an ubuntu cd, and running gparted to setup the partitions. Then I installed win7, then ubuntu and manually set linux directories to those partitions (home, root, swap). Ubuntu will automatically setup the grub boot screen so you can choose what OS you want to run on each boot. -
thanks guys i managed to do it

now the only thing left to do is install the drivers on ubuntu which i don't think is possible but if it is please let me know. My laptop has a fingerprint reader which I would love to use.

Ubuntu will recognize Windows 7 as "vista". If you want to change the entry in the bootloader, just edit the GRUB menu file.
As for drivers, Ubuntu has a restricted driver manager that can take care of ATI and NVidia graphics, as well as Broadcom, and ATheros wireless. If sound works, good for you. If not, post back here. You can test the webcam by using a program like cheese. FIngerprint reader? I gues you're SOL. -
the only sound that works for me is when i bootup ubuntu. I tried watching youtube videos and i hear nothing at max volume. how can i fix this?

I have installed windows 7 here too.
However it seems like 7 doesn't really like being pushed back to my third partition. Often enough it complains and i have to put the dvd and repair it.
Once, I changed the 7 partition size, it stopped booting and there was no other way than reinstalling 7. As for just today, again it doesn't boot but this time it seems to be the same error of when I changed partition size. It doesn't boot again and it seems like I will have to re-reinstall it. I'm getting sick of this. No windows repair/chkdsk/restoring windows to MBR fixes it. I might get back to XP again. -
well i decided to get rid of ubuntu and windows 7 64 bit and go with windows 7 RC 32 bit so that i can get counter strike to work along with a few other things. the downside to this is that i have 4g of ram and windows currently only recognizes 2.96g.
Enunes- im no expert, but if you have to keep reverting to the backup disc then mayb windows 7 is just not working for u. go back to xp pro until the rtm of windows 7 comes out? or mayb u installed the 64 bit version when u need 32bit? best of luck to you
