I cleared out the recovery partition on my dv5t to install Ubuntu on. However i keep getting an error when i try and install Ubuntu. I dont want to partition my HD again cause im afraid of loosing everything. What should i do? Is there a way to merge the empty partition back into the main one?
Thanks in advance.

What does the error say?
You can merge the recovery partition by using Gparted (a modified ver of Linux that boots into a partition manager) to delete the recovery partition, then expanding the main partition to take that unallocated space. -

You need to define a root mount point (specified as /) because / is where Linux will be installed. In your case, specify the recovery partition as / by right-clicking on the partition and setting it to /.

You need to format the file system to ext3 first. Create a linux-swap partition around the same size of your RAM

How is the compatibility of the dv5t with Ubuntu 8.10? Anything not working? I'm shopping for a laptop for my girlfriend and she likes the dv5t.

I had to install Ubuntu 8.10 using the alternate CD. I could not install it using the graphical interface of the Live CD.
After installation, I had trouble booting into Ubuntu. To solve this problem, I had to go into BIOS and turn off "FAN always on when on AC power" or something like that.
Ubuntu is picking up my intel 5100 card and the internet is working great. I can't seem to get bluetooth to work but I won't be using that. Ubuntu is able to control my fans so the laptop is running at 50C max when idle.
I don't know what you have for graphics, but there appears to be no issues with my integrated 4500 graphics.
