I've heard of this problem before but never run into it until I came into a situation where I'd like to use my older laptop with an external monitor.

At the moment I've got an old VAIO with Ubuntu 8.04 (I think when I upgrade to 8.10 I will change to Xubuntu) and I can't get my external monitor to work (a 19'' HP) It works for my BIOS, Grub, and WindowXP partition but as soon as Ubuntu loads my monitor blinks out.

Anything I can do to get monitor support?

Look into xrandr. 8.10 should make it easier (I think there's an actual configuration tool or something). I had to write a script to run when I hit the screen switching keys, though, but it works fine. I switch from multiple to single and back all day long (whee meetings!)

If your card is nvidia or ATI your can use their respective control panel to enable output to the external monitor...
