Hi
After installing Ubuntu and experiencing only a few glitches (I can't adjust the screen lights, and the battery seems to drain a little fast), I thought I would try to play around a little with linux. I have an older laptop which I don't have to use anymore in about a week, and thought I would install Linux on that one.
I thus wanted to ask if anyone could recommend a distribution that 1) is easy to install, like Ubuntu (doesn't have to be that easy, but not crazy either) and 2) is as fast as possible when emailing/browsing/using open office??
Thanks

I mean, you might just want to try Xubuntu on that laptop. Same Ubuntu, but with a lighter, faster xfce desktop environment. If you want to go even lighter, try Crunchbang which is also based on Ubuntu.
Another one that might suit you is Sidux. It's based on Debian and you can choose to install the xfce desktop too.
Note that if you poke around a little bit, a lot of the major distributions will offer lighter "remixes" with xfce desktops. One of the key factors will be, does the OS work well with my wifi card and does the OS offer sufficient packages and package management? Ubuntu does both of these exceptionally well at the moment. -
I think Xubuntu it is. Thanks!

I'm going to try out Xubuntu too, and I'm new to the whole Linux experience.

Richierich: as one noob to another, just expect that it is a pretty big step - an example: my light-adjusting button doesn't work in Linux, and I have no clue how to fix it. Cries for help on many forums has led to nothing. Just wanted to let you know that small, annoying things might pop up, and solutions are not easy!
Please post your experiences with Xubuntu in here, or PM me!
Fast, Faster, ...?
