What's your favorite media player for Linux? There are tons of options, but I don't really want to install them all and see which one I like the best.![]()
So please give me recommendations.![]()
-
You're using Gnome?
-
Windows Media Player (just kidding)
-
vlc -.-.....
-
VLC, and MPlayer.
-
Ubuntu. (It's in my sig).
-
I use mplayer. But I like the CLI.
What you like will depend on your needs, but mplayer does everything once you know how. -
So, is mplayer included by default? All I've seen is Totem and Rythmbox?, I think. And neither of them had any equalizer that I could find.
Winamp so rocks the house. -
For me mplayer is the best
-
VLC and Winamp

VLC is available for Linux. Also, there is XMMS, which is a (outdated) clone of Winamp. (has anyone tried XMMS 2 ?)
-
Uhhh.... Linux section.. lol
sorry
Anyway, yea.. I use(d) Ubuntu and VLC works in it..
-
For video, I use xine because I find it easier to remember what keys to press, but it doesn't work with some DVD menus so I also have VLC installed.
For music, I use mpd with the ncmpc client. -

Used to be a Windows Media Player only guy until it started stuttering and couldn't play mkv files.
So now it's VLC for me. -

Ok, thanks for the recommendations guys...I started this thread because I had noticed that the sound just wasn't as good from Ubuntu as Windows (Winamp), because I had so many EQ options from Winamp. I'll definitely give these a try.

Thanks.

Kubuntu user here, I use Amarok for music and Kaffeine for most videos.
Any audio I play from a folder instead of my playlist, or any videos that don't work right in Kaffeine, get played with VLC.

Rythmbox, xmms and vlc

Amarok for music, Kaffeine for video. VLC and MPlayer's graphical frontend has a GTK interface, so I don't like them. Also, VLC gave me scratchy sound (fixed now, I think) and MPlayer still gives me grainy video. I use MPlayer on occasion when Kaffeine can't play something correctly, and VLC whenever I'm on Windows.
-
MPlayer, for video, because it has a good cli. MPD for music, for the same reason.
-
Agreed , I am huge fan of VLC and Amarok as well.
-
im actually surprized nobody else uses songbird!

The way I see it, these new "all in one" applications go completely against the Unix philosophy of one application per task, allowing for maximum modularity and competition between similar applications. Firefox browses the best, Amarok plays music the best - why try to combine them and create an application that does a little bit of both, but neither part as well as the individual applications?
-
I like Audacious...Sounds good, and all my Winamp Skins don't go to waste. Plus I love that Rock Light Plugin.
-
Amarok does a fantastic job of indexing and cataloguing a sizeable music collection. I'm a good-habits kinda guy, so it's all correctly stored in properly named directories, but it's a fantastic piece of software which is very easy to use.
VLC for video on the desktop. There isn't much it can't do.
Freevo via my TV-out for watching films, or listening to music in bed. Outputs via MPlayer, I seem to recall... though it may be xine. They're equally great, and equally crap. -
If you don't mind its hideous UI (worse than foobar2000 on Windows, as if that is possible), Aqualung probably is the best music player. Otherwise, Amarok is great all-round music player.
I don't care much for movie player, but I use kmplayer and kaffeine. -
1. Songbird cannot access files(songs) in NTFS drive.
2. VLC opens a lot of instances.
3. Default players looks crap with its visualisations..
Hope Ubuntu comes up with something cool. -
