Hi currently I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and was looking to switch...Hopefully I'd just like to start a general discussion about the two distros and see which one might be better in some instances. I'm guessing Fedora would be because its targeted toward more advanced users and could be operated across servers if need be??

The last version of Fedora Core that I tested was 5, so I can't really speak for FC6. However, I do recall that 5 had a rather lenghty install process and really wasn't too user friendly up front. But like I said, that was a long time ago and I don't remember that much about it. I do remember for some reason though that I wanted to install it on my hard drive (I was using it via VMware).

When I was making the guide I got some fairly positive remarks on fedora 6, but these were people who use it for servers. In general though people said that it was difficult to setup and did not have great hardware support. I am upgrading to Ubuntu 6.10 right now, so I will let you know how that goes.

Fedora Core 6 is a fantastic distro, a great improvement on 5.
The reason I use Ubuntu is because of the documentation. If you have an issue, it is a lot easier to find info for Ubuntu than Fedora. The hardware support is not different from Ubuntu.
That being said, have a try of Fedora. If you like it more than Ubuntu, keep it. No one can really say which is better for you, you have to decide it for yourself. -
Well do not do an upgrade from 6.06-6.10, it just crashed. I think there is a way to fix it, although I might just do a clean install. Has anyone tried using the fix that is on the ubuntu website? I tried it and it gave me the message that it could not lock admin files or something.

Ubuntu 6.10 and I dont get along very well. Right now I have 6.06 on my machine.
Fedora Core 6 isnt on my laptop right now, but on my desktop its great. I love it. -
As an aside, hows Enlightenment, TV? I was thinking of trying it out, but haven't got around to it yet.
-
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of Ubuntu 6.10 either. I still have it on my M90, but when I wiped my Vista partition I gave it to 6.06. Much more stable in my opinion.

Man... for some reason my notebook does not like Ubuntu 6.10. I think I am just going to do a clean install of 6.06 LTS. I even had my computer geek cousin, who used to fix linux systems for a profession, over hear trying to fix it, and he couldn't do it. Its a shame cause I was looking forward to 6.10, maybe I will try burning the 6.10 ISO and booting from it. See what happens.

6.10 is testy with some systems, and 6.06 is generally a safer bet. However, on those systems which it does work, it is brilliant.

just wanted to mention that 6.06 was nothing but problems on my Asus z63a. the livecd worked ok, although it didn't look happy while booting up. post-install, well, that was just a mess.
6.10, on the other hand, worked pretty much totally out of the box. 915resolution and NetworkManager were the only two things I needed, besides the restricted codecs. -
nite owl, It seems like Linux distros work better on different computers, so you might want to go ahead and try both of the distros you are looking at. They are free, so you would not be loosing anything, except for maybe 25 cents for the CD.
-
Of course if you use CD-RW's.....
-
I thought I'd never use CD-RWs again, until I realised I was downloading 5 or so different disrtos a month. They do come in handy, especially when trying everything out.

Yea, you just erase them.
Fedora Core 6 or Ubuntu 6.10
