I use Ubuntu Studio 8.10 and my FireFox performs terribly. The scrolling lags (and continues scrolling well after I finished scrolling), causing lock ups and freezes. Switching tabs is a little sluggish too, as is typing something into the URL bar for the first time. Essentially, EVERYTHING is slow. I've tried turning off CPU scaling to no avail.

    Thanks!

Some suggestions after searching on the Ubuntu forums:
    - try disabling smooth scrolling
    - try disabling JavaScript in the FF options
    - install the Flash Block add-on
    - try disabling composite desktop effects to see if that is causing the problem

Also, try 9.04 when it hits tomorrow. FF works much better I think.

Definitely....9.04 is a step forward in Linux IMO....Canonical is leading the way to getting linux more popularized.

Agreed. I'm using the Jaunty Beta right now, and I've gotta say that even the beta is great

Yeah, I had some problems with FF slowing down and overtaking the entire screen in the 64 bit version of 8.10 (probably because of flash not working correctly), but not in the 32 bit version. Besides that, 8.10 didn't work very well with the new hardware on my laptop.

I've been running the 32 bit version of 9.04 for the last few weeks and have nothing but good things to say about it. I mean, it really rocks.

Tonight I am going to install the 64 bit version of 9.04 with ext4. I'll report back whether or not things are working. I did recently read some chatter on ubuntu forums about a recent update that made FF unworkable for some folks using 64 bit 9.04.

    Gotta go read some more.

A lot of it relates to your graphics drivers. What video card do you have? If you were running a SVGA driver instead of something with acceleration, you'll see the effects you're describing.

I have an ATi X1600, with the fglrx drivers.

I tried turning off composite desktop effects. That helped marginally. But killing smooth scrolling really fixed it. I'll keep Compiz on. There still may be a bit of lag, but no where near as bad as before. And I'll hope for better performance tomorrow with 9.04.

    Thanks!
