I keep around 100-150 tabs open in firefox sessions.
As a result I observed high CPU/RAM usage even when firefox was idle.
I installed flashblock, and immediately observed a decrease a CPU/RAm usage.
I would say that idle CPU usage dropped by half.
I then installed noscript. And again, a drop in cpu/ram usage. Idle cpu usage has again dropped by half.
So, I'm wondering, what the heck does firefox run even when idle ? Flash I understand, but what else ?

Lol...yeah...150+ tabs?????

Well, you've basically answered your own question. What does flashblock block? What does noScript deny?

I have the same question as the others.
How in the world do you run anything meaningful with 100-150 tabs open?
I understand its benchmarking capabilities to test the system... but really what do you do with 100-150 tabs? -

About 20 tabs open for NBR (linux, dell, dell business, apple, HP, reviews etc)
5 different email tabs (different email accounts)
About 20 tabs for linux
Similarly 50 tabs or so for other forums.
Add another 50 tabs for miscellanious things (news, tech, research, amazon, weather etc).
Usually doesnt cause any problems. Only limitation is that flash videos become choppy. -

Hard to work with as in computer cannot handle it ?

I typically only have 1-5 tabs open at any given time. Once I'm done with a tab, I close it and move along. How on earth can you keep track of all of those tabs? I'd get swamped and end up throwing my laptop halfway across the room.

Getting a bit OT here, so what scripts are running on firefox that cause so much CPU usage ?
-
Again, what do flashblock and noscript block? Javascript and flash. You know those flashy banners like in the Dell home page? Those things move. Also, every tab has a footprint. Tabs stay in ram and require the CPU every time they update. You can't expect to have so many tabs running without getting a huge resource hit. I'd also venture to say that that would be a significant security liability if you do it in Windows.

So javascript keeps consuming CPU ? Its not like do something then stop ?
-
Javascript is like dogs - some are running, some just lie there.

Many webpages have active scripts and stuff running, even when the tab isn't open. Flash is notorious for consuming CPU even when the browser is minimized.
I don't see how you manage with so many tabs. Short of a 5-monitor setup, I think it would just make things harder. I get annoyed when i have more than ~8 tabs. -

The trick is to organise the tabs. I have one window for each subclass, eg, one window for NBR (with several tabs), one window for debian forums, one for linuqforum, one for email ....
Then, my bottom window dock in gnome has two rows.
Having a WUXGA laptop also helps -
I'm sure having linux workspaces helps a lot too.

I dont use the workspaces. Somehow I'm not comfortable with swicthing workspaces.

waw! i have 30-50 tabs open. i thought it is because i am not well organised...
i switched from ff to opera as it seems to handle my web browsing habits better.
Firefox CPU & RAM usage, and noscript
