Last week I was messing around with Firefox in Gutsy and I got the page bar, the part where is say "Linux Compatibility and Software - Notebook and Laptop Discussion", to disappear. I am not exactly sure how I did it, but when I rebooted it came back and I couldn't figure out what I had done. I am all about maximizing space so I liked not having it there. Anyone got an idea on how to replicate what I did? Thanks for any help.

Are you talking about the Full screen mode (F11)?
-
No because I still had all the other Linux toolbars.
-
Do you run Gutsy with Compiz Fusion visual effects enabled?
Edit: I don't *think* it's possible (unless you use some coding to permanently remove it) but I've found that the extension Autohide allows to customize the Fullscreen mode (and force it to show the taskbar). Unfortunately, it only works in Windows...so I will continue to search. -
Thanks for looking. As I said, I'm not really sure what I did. I did have some of the visual effects enabled, but I'm not running Compiz. I only have the Intel card.

They should make it a feature as far as I'm concerned. I for the most part know what page I'm on. Telling me is a waste of valuable real estate.

I've finally found one way to remove it (with Gnome):
1- Open /usr/share/firefox/chrome with root privileges (by typing in gnome-terminal: sudo nautilus /usr/share/firefox/chrome)
2-You should find there a file called browser.jar
3- Unpack that file in /usr/share/firefox/chrome
4- Go to /usr/share/firefox/chrome/browser/content/browser/ and open the file browser.xul with gedit.
5- Inside the <window> element (at the beginning of the file), add the line hidechrome="true"
6- Save and exit.
7- Go to /usr/share/firefox/chrome/ and repack the folder /browser/content/browser/ into browser.jar
8- Replace previous browser.jar file with the new one.
9- Restart Firefox.
After the changes, the close button will have disappeared so you will have to use ALT+F4 or something like that to close Firefox. -
I'll just vouch for this workaround. I installed it and it works great. If you are like me, I always want as much space as possible and who doesn't know what page they're on anyway?
As noted you'll lose the close button in the corner. I always set up the Windows key in Linux, via the keyboard customizer, to perform the Alt+F4 function.
