I don't think anyone replied to you yet. Look into "modules" -- those are what you are thinking of. It's generally distro-specific as to where you get them.

Even then, it's still the best machine I got.

And, my philosophy's always been this: Linux is great for someone just starting with computers. Teaches good habits, and they get up to speed much quicker. It's also great for advanced users and professionals, because they have the knowledge to do exactly what they want with it. It's those silly Windows and Mac 'Power Users' that always seem to have issues with Linux.

Nice, that's a good point. Even though i was a Windows power user i'm open minded so i could free myself from the chains.

I was in the same boat. It's the "I know Windows, so therefore I know how a computer works" crowd that get snagged.

Linux forces personal accountability on a user. If you mess up your Linux distro, its your fault so you can't really complain to anyone without sounding silly. I mean, its free and you choose what you put on your computer. Windows Vista is pretty awesome in the respect that it is easy to use, installations of drivers and software are relatively easy compared to most linux distros, it is pretty, and requires little knowledge of computers to operate. I'm sure we all know the draw-backs, though :)

It's pretty hard to screw up a good linux distro though. There aren't viruses. No one writes them. No one writes malware or spyware for linux. No one bothers writing that kind of stuff for linux.(other than a few noob programs that are basically delete all from hard-drive.)

If you are unhappy with a program, just uninstall.

Ubuntu 8.04 runs as fast as XP does. WAY Faster than Vista does on my machine. XP might have it beat on my other 7200 RPM HDD (it slow).

The only actual "viruse" i know for Linux as you said, delete everything from your home folder. If you give it root access now, then it'll delete everything from your entire disc, or it could be a zipped bomb or something of the sort.

Maybe I should actually go and read the article, but I don't think I'd be convinced, so....maybe I'll read it sometime. :D
