Is there an easy way to install fonts on Ubuntu? I tried simply copying and pasting fonts into /usr/share/fonts/truetype, but it says that I don't have permission to write to that folder.
Also, I have Generic ATI video card drivers installed. Does that enable full functionally of my X1600, or is 3D disabled? In order to run Beryl, do I have to install the ATI proprietary drivers?

There should be a folder called .fonts in your /home/ directory. If not, create it and drop the fonts into there.

If you aren't comfortable dealing with stuff through Nautilus or at the command line, you can install a boatload of fonts through Automatix2.

There is also a Nautilus that you can run as root, but it's hidden by default in Ubuntu. Right click the main menu, then click something about customize or preferences (not sure which). When the window comes up allowing you to show or hide programs in your Main Menu, go to System Tools, and there should be a root window manager or something like that. Other than that, you can type either gksu nautilus or gksudo nautilus, and it will bring up a file browser window where you have root privileges to write to any folder in the file system.

I'm not sure about your video card drivers; I do believe you need the proprietary drivers for them installed though. I'm sure you can either get help online or from Lysander if you need it.

For installing the drivers you can use Alberto Milone's program called Envy...

It will basically automate the installation of the ATI drivers entirely.
I'll give you a link to a how-to on installing Beryl with an ATI card as well. Not sure if you've already read up on this stuff, but here it is.

You WILL require the FGLRX drivers for your X1600. Ubuntu's default Radeon drivers do not support the X1000 series of cards, as ATi haven't released the full specs to the community.
For Beryl, you will have to install FGLRX, then XGL, then finally Beryl.

MAN! You linux guys are the most helpful out of all the other sub-groups. Thanks a lot.
edit: It took me a while to figure out that in order to create .deb files from the proprietary ATI drivers, none of the folders it was in could have spaces! -
It's a lot easier to just install the ATi drivers from the Ubuntu repositories. Those are the drivers I use, and are said to be the most stable on Ubuntu machines.
