Instead of moving to Vista, I want to try Linux. A friend gave me a Knoppix 5.0.1 live DVD to try. It works fine on his computer but I have two problems:

    1. My computer will not turn off. When I log off, with either shutdown or restart, the shutdown sequence proceeds to the open DVD tray step. I remove the DVD, close the tray, and press return. Then the computer hangs. It never shuts off. I have to pull the power and the battery to turnoff.

    2. The 7510gx has a Broadcom 802.11g wireless card. iwconfig identifies the chip as 43xx. Kwifimanager scan does not find any wireless networks and a google search says that Linux does not support the 43xx because Broadcom has not made the driver available. A kwifimanager scan on my friend's computer finds 4 networks. Of course, he does not have a Broadcom adapter. He suggests I use ndiswrapper with the driver on a flash drive.

Does anyone have any ideas about these two problems; especially the shutdown. If I can not shutdown or reboot, then I an not willing to continue with Knoppix. My friends answer is to get a cheap desktop without a Broadcom chip and play with a real distro.

it won't shut down even if you hold down the power button?

similar thing happened with my Ubuntu LiveCD.

you'll need ndiswrapper, which basically allows windows drivers to function in Linux. I have no experience with it myself, but google should have plenty of information and how-tos.
