You can certainly get Linux to look like Vista. There are a lot of theme options to do this. You don't even really need Beryl for it.

Yeah, for the Vista Basic look, you don't need Beryl. Beryl gives you the transparencies. When KDE 4 ships, you prolly wont need Beryl to get a Vista Clone UI.

And why would we want to flame you? GNU/Linux is all about choice. If someone chooses to have their desktop look Vista-ish, good on them.

Agreed. It's not the look of Vista that most people don't like... it's the actual OS. I've toyed around with making Ubuntu look like Vista in the past.

I don't think that you will find the flaming here that you would normally find if you spoke of Vista elsewhere.

Well, one of the things we like to go on about it choice, and we'd be hypocrites if we bashed people about their choices, especially if they were using Linux.

Now, we can try and convince people that our way of thinking is better, but in the end, the choice lies with the individual.

i love linux too a lot... though i prefer windows as my main OS coz i think it's better in many ways... i'm just amazed of so many people bashing vista not only on this place but more so in linux forums..

you can't really compare linux and vista, IMO... coz vista is way ahead of linux..

the only good things i think about linux are:
    1. it's free
    2. requires a lot lower hardware requirements than vista
    3. security (well this is only because very few people are interested in creating viruses for linux and exploring its security flaws... the same can be said of Mac)

No, you're stating ill-conceived opinion. Vista is a lot more secure than XP (at least it appears to be so far), but it still has a long way to go before it's at the level of UNIX. Only with Vista did they finally add UAC, which is annoying and most people will turn it off. That's not to mention the easily corruptible registry.

And I won't even mention DRM in this post...

*ahem* We are the best people around! That's why M$ wants us to fall off the wayside!

If so, there must be reasons. Have you sought to find them out?

It's a moot point, really. You can probably explain your side, and Linux users have another POV.

There are quite a bit more reasons why open source, Unix-type OS-es are better. If you are interested in knowing what they are, I suggest the FSF.org

I ONLY use Windows for gaming, and tat's it. Other feature wise, they are about the same.... oh, and oso, i bash Vista only coz of how expensive they are, overall it is good. But it hasnt reach the state of Value, yet...

Here is an article that I would suggest anyone looking at Vista read. It was linked to in another thread over in the Windows section, but I don't know if anyone read it. It's a long read, and very technical, but if you can make sense of it, it's astonishing the things that are in there.

If those were the only advantages Linux had over Windows, I would still be using Windows XP now. I never had security problems (ran in restricted user mode, only browsed safe sites, etc). So unix wouldn't have helped me much, and hasn't in this regard.

Now, with the FSF, and especially Ubuntu, I see a cause I can get behind: I run my computer the way I want to. I've joined the Ubuntu AU team, to try and help as best I can. I can't write more than basic, basic programs, but I can try and help squash bugs, promote free software, and help people with their technical problems. I'm working my way up to a Linux Engineer certification, so that I can help administer the UNIX computers at my university. I have never given myself so wholly to a cause, as with Ubuntu. Perhaps this is testament to it's current successes and potential improvements.

Linux to me is much more than a "secure OS". It's my preferred gateway to the world, and security is less than 10% of the reasons.

    speaking of security... try OpenBSD.

they recently found their second ever remotely exploitable flaw... in over a decade of existence.

They were actually using Kubuntu there, not Ubuntu. But I have done some messing around with my Ubuntu install and gotten it similar.

Yeah... that's in the "default" configuration though. They have still shipped services like sendmail which have holes in them, but they don't "count" because they aren't enabled by default. Take anything Theo de Raadt says with a big grain of salt.
