I installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS on my fathers Dell XPS M170. It has a Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX video card. We had used a trial version of W7 and it could display 1080p through VGA to a 37" VIZIO LCD telelvision. Now with 10.04 it will not go higher than 1024X768.

Does anyone have an idea on how it would be possible to get a higher external resolution?

You're using the proprietary NVIDIA driver? Run nvidia-settings and try hitting detect displays under "X Server Display Configuration" a few times.

If that doesn't do it you can try a different version of the driver or try forcing the resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It could be a problem with the EDID which can sometimes be fixed in a later version of the driver. You can run xrandr or look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see which modelines were detected for that display.
