Yeah, any driver crashed, configur dumped, just go to plain terminal mode and get back to where you start with. You case is not even driver crash, just xorg messed up.
ATI is bit of trick in Beryl, but there are tons of Wiki, Swiki there helping you.

the thing is that you need a bit of knowledge of what the various ways of fixing stuff without a GUI.

it's kinda unfortunate, really. the times where you're most likely to have trouble where you'll need to use the command line are when you have the least experience with it.

Then go on google from the command line, then everything is still at your disposal.

Really, I don't mind you go back to Vista. You tried it, you don't like it. No big deal. I always find it strange to read these kind of threats to the community. I don't feel the need to convince anybody to use Linux. It works for me, but I don't feel bad if it doesn't work for somebody else.

the problem is that most people don't back up their original xorg.conf, so it's not just a simple "sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Yeah, I usually make sure to do that before I do anything to it. Then after I get my graphics drivers installed, I do it again, so at least I'll still have hardware accleration if I do mess it up again.

Of course, the flip side is that if my graphics drivers get hosed, then I'm still screwed. I guess I should make some kind of xorg.conf.original file or something.

Nop, with just backup not totally solve the problem. But actually, the dpkg-reconfigure xorg.xserver really do backup automatically before you get any change. I use it to do most GPU backward configuration and also of course reconfiguration. You still need to deal with little details after work. But it almost straight everything out.
