    Questions from a noob. What will Gnome 3 bring to the table that Gnome 2 can't? Will desktops look different with 3.0 as in i.e. fancier effects etc?

    They are working on Gnome Shell which is completely different in function...you can install an alpha or beta version of it now to check it out....last time I did I wasn't too impressed with it...but that was a long time ago.

    So what benefits is an end user of say Ubuntu 11 or Mint 10 might see in the release if it were to use Gnome 3.0? :confused:

    Well, a much faster API is one.

    Applications will be much faster, and they are pretty much redefining the desktop.

    Sort of, but then again they were being developed around the same time.

    Also, that's not the main desktop, just the activities screen, the main desktop just has the top panel.

    It's written mostly in Javascript and C I think.

    That screen will only popup when you click on activities from the default Gnome 3 desktop;

    These next 4 screencasts look pretty nice to me... :)

    Opening up the 'Activities' from regular workspace; link
    Launch apps & open docs; link
    Add workspaces, move programs between them and more; link
    Expand apps view, more drag and drop options; link

    looks slick and will make it easier for people whom just want to use their computer and not fiddle around with it. But will still be customizable. I'm looking forward to it.

    Makes me want to buy a TM2 just to touch it. This is gonna be huge for multitouch screen owners.

    I'd also just like to note gnome-panel and such will still be supported, which means you can get the new APIs with the same feel of the desktop.
