Ive been considering switching my DV5z from Vista, which stinks, to Ubuntu. One thing holding me back is Ive seen that there are issues with the audio out over HDMI to a TV. Has anyone gotten the HDMI audio out to work yet?

I managed to get it working on my HTPC. If it's an nvidia or ATI chipset, it should be doable. May require some fiddling, but Jaunty has inherent support for the 690g and 8200/9300 chipsets.

It seems your dv5 is similar to my dv2. ATI chipset, IDT audio. If you go with Ubuntu 8.10, sound will work out of the box, but added steps will be needed to make HDMI audio work.

If you go with Ubuntu 9.04, you will encounter three problems:

    1) Failure to boot from live CD
    2) No sound (analog or HDMI)
    3) COnfiguring HDMI audio out

All three can be solved. I have no guide handy, but I can help you if needed. As a first step, it is preferable to use a bootable USB stick to install Jaunty.
