I had to fix a reboot loop a few hours ago and I wrote a howto guide because it's simple but easy to forget (especially with very little sleep). Hope this helps someone besides me.

I just hope I can remember it if I don't have an internet connection, even after writing a short guide.
I always try to keep as many devices around me as possible, but as you said, it happens when you least expect it. Luckily it wasn't my own system this time, but I run Debian Sid/Unstable and GRUB 2 has broken before, and other things have broken my initrds even (that is a nasty one -- I keep at least two old kernel packages installed now to fall back on), so I try to keep the worst case scenario covered at all times.
