    Hello.
I'm thinking of getting the HP DV2550SE and I'm wondering if anybody has successfully installed Linux on it. I read somewhere "there's a BIOS thing with the HP dv2500t on which the Verve is apparently based which prevents one from running Linux" and it made me scared, as I intend to use Linux (Slackware) as my main OS.

It is true that the dv2550SE doesn't have a legacy BIOS mode. I know people have installed Ubuntu Feisty on the Verve (check the Ubuntu forums), but the BIOS has created issues for them. I don't really know what a legacy BIOS mode does, but it's absence affects Windows XP as well as Linux.

oh crap... I wanted this laptop so much...

I always thought that legacy mode was the option to boot from USB...

Oh really? Man I was so excited to finally try linux. Oh well - it wasn't meant to be I guess (stupid BIOS). This isn't just for the verve, but all dv2500 series Pavilions, correct?

Seems that you have your laptop. Why not try to lunch a ubuntu 7.10 live cd on it. You may have some problems with the Go 8400m cuz this card is not fully supported but anyway just try to run it with vesa drivers.

I ordered the Live CD today, so we'll see (they said it'd be here in 4 weeks or so). I'm a total newbie to Linux-based OSes (or dual booting in general), but it'd be a great learning experience.

It's more simple to download the .iso and burn it. It takes like 1 or 2 hours to download on a dsl connection. Anyway ill try to go at best buy today and see if they let me boot from CD  ...

Well, I'm really busy in the next coming weeks with midterms and if I mess up my computer I'll be ****ed... I have so many ProEngineer files on it and if I lose them - that is very very bad.

We'll see. Maybe soon I'll be able to download the iso and try it.

If I run it directly from the CD, will it react any differently than installing on the HDD? Obviously it'll be slower, but will the problems with the BIOS show up?

If so, I can probably do it next weekend (not this one because I have 2 midterms on monday and wednesday).
