Hi guys, I am brand spanking new to this thing...but I'm STRONGLY considering trying it out. However, I have a small home network, where I have an HP L7580 All-in-one printer networked in, and it works fine. Apparently, there is no chance of me being able to print to it on the network, if I'm running Ubuntu on one or some of the machines? The printer is already installed, and works fine on my network (which comprises one desktop PC, and 1/2/3 laptops wired and wireless). I do not have it hard connected to any of the machines (LPT or USB), as in order to share and print to it, the 'server' machine will have to be on...which is not how I want it to work. The desktop and 2 laptops are running XP Pro SP2. I'm planning to have the desktop and one (HP nc6000) on dual boot, though. My personal elitebook (6930p) is from work, so that will be on XP Pro SP3 only. Any advice?

You should be able to apt-get install hplip on Ubuntu and then go to System->Administration->Printing and add your network printer.
See this page for compatibility info. -
Thank you - this gives me some more confidence now!

If it's a postscript compatible printer (most are) you shouldn't have any problems. I print to multiple different network printers here at the office from my Linux laptop (an HP LaserJet and a Ricoh multifunction device mostly). Most "good" network printers work perfectly under Linux. It's actually easier IMHO to print under Linux than under Windows.
