open a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole and type:
    lsusb
That should tell you the vendor:device ID of your webcam (for example, my Phillips web cam is 0471:0311). Then you use those digits to figure out what driver you need.

Search here to see if supported by uvc driver: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#devices

Search here to see if supported by gspca driver: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Less common is the microdia driver:
    http://groups.google.com/group/microdia?lnk=gschg

There is also the ov51x driver:
    http://www.rastageeks.org/ov51x-jpeg/index.php/Working_Webcams

If it is a driver with a SONIX SN9C20x bridge (device IDs 0c45:62xx): Visit http://groups.google.com/group/microdia?lnk=gschg. This driver is currently in early development stage, but it still supports devices 6242, 624e, 624f, 6260, 6270, 627b.

    There is the zr364xxx driver:
    http://royale.zerezo.com/zr364xx/

There is the syntek dc-1125 driver
    http://syntekdriver.sourceforge.net/

But I suspect your HP uses a uvc or a gspca, or a microdia, if any.

Once you figure out the driver you need, use the method recommended by your distro to install the driver.

Make certain you do not have more drivers installed than you need. They can interfere with each other.
