I tried setting up an HP Laserjet 1018 yesterday in Ubuntu but it just won't print. I go to add a printer and selected Laserjet USB #1 since I figured that Ubuntu just recognized the printer. And I added that and then it asked me to install a driver (foo2zjs) on the next screen. So I clicked install driver and then it told me to look for a PPD file which i could not find so I just exited without installing this driver.

Hopefully my problem is just with installing the driver.

    Thanks for the help.

Ok I am following the instructions at the foo2zjs site and after i type in the "make" command i get this output:

    david@david-laptop:~/foo2zjs$ make
    #
    # Dependencies...
    #
    ***
*** Error: /usr/include/stdio.h is not installed!
    ***
*** Install Software Development (gcc) package
    ***
    make: *** [all-test] Error 1

Thanks t12tek. That seemed to help at first but I still couldn't print. It would come up with a printing icon in the tray but then it would say like process stopped or something. So I tried repeating the process but now I don't even get an icon in the tray. Any advice?

If you haven't noticed... all I've been doing is a couple quick searches, and reposting info that's already there. I don't have either your hardware nor software setup, so that's pretty much all I can do at this point. With my current knowledge, without actually sitting at your workstation, I don't know what else to do.

Really, at this point, the most advice I can give you is try searching for help yourself, check the Ubuntu Forums, the Linux Printing site, the foo2zjs forums, or other places like those for advice or people with similar problems. Failing that, you can always try doing a Google search with terms like, "Linux Printing HP 1018 foo2zjs Ubuntu", or something similar.

    speedsterdm,

    Okay,

    1. go into cups and "delete or remove" printer, close.
    2. go into printers, do the same as above.
    3. start over, go into "printers" first, follow through setup.
    4. last go into cups, your printer should now show up there.
    5. complete printer setup in cups.
    6. print, you may open oo to see if it shows up correctly.

sidebar, if you start with cups first, then the printer dialog it'll get
messed up, just remember, printers first cups second.

    if having done the get, make install has messed things up go here;

    http://hplip.sourceforge.net/

and download the latest package for your distro.

read ( and follow :) the instructions and you should be on your way.

    hth, db

Despite the fact that it's an HP printer, the HP LaserJet 1018 is NOT supported by hplip, both the fact that it is not in the supported devices page on the hplip, as well as the fact that the Linux Printing page for that printer does not specify hplip as providing a valid driver.

    okay,

thats odd, didn't (re)check the site, just my own, i have the previous
version of hplip and the 1018 shows up with the foo2jzs, i would have
thought that the .ppd was in there. lets see, here's another persons
    end run

    http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1018

quite odd that it shows up and has "issues" as well, reading the "user notes" it seems
there is a solution, near the bottom.

part of the problem is lack of "due diligence"

    sorry about that, db

ps; finger wagging and shouting is poor form to take with someone trying to assist.

If you saw my comment as finger wagging (which I can see, barely) or even shouting (I can't see that at all), then I apologize, because that wasn't my intention at all. My intention was simply to correct what I saw as an error before it led readers astray. If I made an erroneous statement, I would both expect and want someone to respond to me in a similar manner.

PS. Aren't you wagging your finger at my finger wagging?

speedsterdm Try connecting and turning on your printer, then reboot.
Then the printer will show up in the list.
