I've been looking around for a new laptop for college and the Sager 2092 seems like a good choice. At the same time, I've been toying around with Ubuntu and I absolutely love it. Sadly the Dell monitor that my desktop uses doesn't like Ubuntu all too much, and it keeps on giving blank and saying that it "Cannot display video mode", so I've had to run it in virtualbox.
For the laptop I would get, I'd certainly want to be able to run Ubuntu without any major issues. If this is my goal, would the Sager 2092 be able to fit it? Would it run into the same display issue as my desktop monitor? Any other problems with Ubuntu running on this laptop?
Also, I have been reading up on the Synaptics Touchpad Driver that allows you to use two-finger scrolling and two-finger right-clicking in Ubuntu. From what I have read, it seems like the Sager 2092 uses an Elantech touchpad. Would it be possible for me to overwrite the Elantech drivers with the Synaptics ones and get the same function, or would it be a lost cause?
Any suggestions as to other possible laptops would be greatly appreciated. Note that the reason I like the Sager is because it has a fairly powerful graphics card, is relatively cheap, and comes with no preinstalled software.
Thank you

Judging by general specs of the 2092, it will run Ununtu just fine. As for using synaptics driver, I see no chance of that working, even if you could.

Agree with Thomas...that Sager is a pretty darned good bang for buck laptop...Asus and Sager (&OEM) are my two brands of choice.

Ah well, thats a shame. The Sager does seem like an excellent buy though. Right now I'm looking at either the 2092 or the new Lenovos that are supposed to come out sometime in the summer.

pyrojoe, I have a Sager NP2090 (aka Compal IFL90). I bought it last August and had no major problem with it. I've documented the installation of Ubuntu on it here:
http://lddubeau.com/avaktavyam/linux-on-a-compal-ifl90/
On Hardy everything works out of the box except sleep and hibernation. This is weird because sleep worked fine in Gutsy and hibernation worked fine most of the time in earlier kernels and pretty much all the time on later kernels in Gutsy.
Here's what I know about the 2092. My wife wants a laptop and she likes mine. I asked paladin44 (from whom I bought my 2090) for the chipset specs of the peripherals on the 2092 and with the response I got, I am confident that Ubuntu will run on a 2092 just like it does on a 2090. I can't be 100% sure because I don't have the machine in hand.
The reason I don't have the machine in hand yet is that it is not quite clear whether we should buy a 2092 for my wife or I should buy a new computer for myself and give her my 2090. I'm waiting to get some information about some of the new laptop releases coming out this summer. But if nothing amazing comes out, we'll definitely buy a 2092. -
Yeah, I have an IFL90 too and Ubuntu 8.04 works perfectly with it.

It work great on my ifl90, the double finger tap is supported natively.
How compatible is a Sager 2092 with Ubuntu?
