How do I anonymise my ip address, lets say for privacy reasons ?
Do I have to go through an anonymiser website portal with all their ads ?
Is there a more direct way ?
I'm connected through a router (to which I have root access).

You have to go through a proxy. And you'll probably need to use a pay to use one if you want to keep high speeds. If the anonymity is more important than the speeds just use Tor.

What is Tor ?
-
its free software and an open network designed to help defend against network surveillance..i think the website for that is www.torproject.org if i remember correctly
-
yep, Tor....
-
Yes but half of it is run by the government. So if you're planning to do any dirty stuff, forget about it.

Bog, if you're interested in running Tor occasionaly, check out Moka5.
On their website you can find plenty of info on how to use their Moka5Player, which you can use to run their Fearless Browser image (with Tor integrated in Firefox, cookies disabled, automatic use of OpenDNS etc) in a VM. -

I have a question on this. The tor page says that the intermediary nodes are run by "volunteers". Do the intermediate nodes have access to my IP address, and the website I visit ?
Not doing anything "dirty" but just curious. I too heard that some IP anonymisers were run by the govts, so the govts have access to what you are doing.
Also, say I use tor, then does my ISP have info on what sites I visit ?
Wondering is there is some really truly anonymous way to browse the web. -
Go to a web cafe (or your friends computer) and let 'er rip....lol

This sounds like the best plan to me...I'm checking it out now...thanks Mr. Baserk

i think the information that travels through proxies are done so in clear text..still allowing your isp to see what you are doing.
a proxy server along with an encryption would be a good route to go..not sure if its the best way.
TOR decentralizes and encrypts your web traffic. but all encrypted data
needs to become visible and decrypted once it reaches its destination though, so the trick is keeping it encrypted for the entire route through the net... Once your data gets outside of the network, you're able to do anything you'd like. [in response to wearetheborg's question] -
They say it's encrypted till it reaches your target. So it doesn't matter who runs the nodes, they won't be able to see it anyway as the encrypted data is split between several nodes at a time. But that's in theory.
But at least your ISP won't see it.
Yes. It's called "leeching your neighbors' wifi".

Why even go that far? Most coffee shops any more will give you wifi if you buy a cup of joe. Lots of places around town here give free wifi.

You could also use a VPN.
