I'm very thankful for all the help I got here on what distro to use on my IBM 600X. However, when I used my desktop to download the pclinuxos-lxde iso file and burn it to a CD, my attempts to boot the 600X from the CD result in "Could not detect available memory size", repeatedly.
I added memory to the machine (it now has 458176 MB) and it shows this on the screen when I turn the machine on. It doesn't have an OS on the machine and when it tries to boot from the CD, it just keeps repeating the error message. Is there any way to cause it to overlook the error or, is it possible that another distro might not get hung up on this problem?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

This looks like it could be a BIOS bug, are you on the latest BIOS?
You could also try forcing the amount of memory as a boot parameter, as in mem=1024M -
My 600X was manufactured in 1999, I believe, and hasn't had a BIOS change. I tried the suggestion to use mem=1024M (and mem=458M) but had no luck.I think I screwed everything up by trying to install linux about a year or two ago, without success. Does anyone think it possible that trying a Windoz CD might help? And, if so, would it be Windows 98?

To a newbie like me, the Debian Squeeze live image sounds like it might help. As soon as it's ready, I intend to download it and give it a try. In the meantime, any suggestions would be appreciated.

It looks like there are some applicable fixes in the later BIOSes for that machine. See the changelog here:
Lenovo Support - Symptoms corrected by the latest BIOS - ThinkPad 600X
Here's the page with the BIOS update itself:
Lenovo Support - BIOS Update (Diskette) - ThinkPad 600X
And the page I found that on:
Lenovo Support - Drivers and software - ThinkPad 600, 600E, 600X
Good luck!
How do I make it boot from the CD?
