    Hello,
I tried linux before, kubuntu/ubuntu 8.04, and although I liked them, I found them to be too buggy and unstable. Now that I have a new notebook I'd like to try it again, only this time 8.10. Anyone who has used it, is it more or less buggy/stable than the last version?
I thought KDE3 was too clunky but I like the screenshots I've seen of version 4. Any thoughts?
    Thanks. :)

So far, it's been quite stable. I did have some glitches and whatnot on 8.04. Intrepid seems better, but I haven't used it for any great length of time yet. ;) :)

8.04 kind of turned me off linux, I spent more time fix things that actually useing it, that said I still use it for banking.

It has always been quite stable... the only reason why I occasionally hose my Linux system is because I screw around with the internals (GPU drivers, GPU underclocking, fan control, etc). ;)

Ubuntu 8.10 has been very stable in my experience with it... although Kubuntu 8.10 (with KDE 4.1) is more bleeding edge and thus less reliable.

I think you'll like it. The only real grievance I've had is that Ctrl+Alt+Del no longer brings up the Shutdown option. :twitchy:

ctrl+alt+backspace just resets X, so it takes longer to restart ;)

Stay away from 8.10 and KDE4 if you think that 8.04 and KDE 3.5 is unstable. You won't be happy with it. That said, you can use Ubuntu and still install kubuntu-desktop and choose between the two desktops when you log in.

I just found out that in Compiz I can do Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Right (or Left) to move the window I'm working on to another desktop! :D

The big thing for me is that I wanted my bluetooth mouse to just work without me having to issue command line statements to sync it up on each reboot. This works great in Ubuntu 8.10 and it has been very stable for me overall. I am very happy with it. I also wanted to have time to just use my laptop, instead of constantly fixing things. I have that now with 8.10.

In 8.04, before I got it all configured (a serious undertaking), Compiz was randomly adjusting the color and size of the "fuzzy border" or whatever it was called around my windows and panels. It was disgusting. Neon pinks and greens...

I could adjust it to the neutral, conservative look I wanted, but, next time I logged out/in, BAM! :D

Also, my touchpad was very sensitive. I got used to it, but it freaked other people out. 8.10 has fixed both of these problems. However, my sound still doesn't like work at the same time as I'm playing videos in Firefox.

    Cheers...

I had some pretty strange things happen to me in 8.04 as well, like for instance linux deciding for some reason it can't establish a connection to my modem (but everything is fine on the modem end, even registering a connection). Then a few days later, magically and for no reason, it will work again. That happened several times to me, even after reinstalling several times.

What do you mean? No sound for videos? No sound at all? Or nothing else has sound when you play videos?

I have a thread about this somewhere...

Basically, if I play music in, say, Rythmbox, then open Firefox, and try to play a YouTube video, there is no sound on the video. If I open the video first, then open Rythmbox and try to play some music, the music won't play. :D

This is because of a sound mixing issue with Pulseaudio. Check out this thread at Ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

Well, my ubuntu/kubuntu discs are arriving today. :) There was a delay, due to "adverse weather conditions" or I would have gotten them on friday. :)
I've been doing some reading about the latest version, and I'm concerned about kubuntu 8.10 supposedly being more unstable than the previous version and missing a lot of features. :( I kind of wish now I didn't' give away my 8.04 discs. :( I just hope ubuntu 8.10 will be better than the last, and I'll be happy. :)
Just some random thoughts. Carry on. :D

I am using Kubuntu 8.10 right now, and will be using it as my only machine for several weeks until my Dell comes back from repair. So far, stability is fairly good, although KDE 4.1 still raises "why the hell did they do that?" questions in my head. Oh, one last thing. Adept 3.0 is such a piece of s***, it's epic. It crashes at least once every time I use it, and apparently it isn't just me.

Well, I like ubuntu 8.10, but I don't care for the latest kubuntu. Kde4 is just, wow, different. I thought kde3 was clunky, but I have to say I liked it better than 4. I don't know, just seems to me they are trying to emulate the look of vista and OS X, and it's too dark for my taste. Maybe I could warm up to it eventually, I don't know.
I'm liking ubuntu though. :D The same familiar interface. It recognizes my digital camera out of the box which is nice (whereas OS X and windows does not), but strangely kubuntu doesn't.
