OK, I am stuck, and have searched through the net without finding the ans.

My laptop got a virus/malware attack last night and I have decided to give linux ubuntu a try, while I am happy with the neat organization and fast speed of this linux OS, I need to go back to Win XP as I need to use programs like (ie: PS 3). I have an XP key but don't have the boot CD.

How will I be able to burn a bootable CD with my current linux system? Like what programs and steps? Will be really appreciated for a full detail explanation as I know close to none about Linux.

Go to the applications menu > multimedia/video > open brasero to burn an ISO to disc.

I can see that program is listed on the add/remove applications menu, some progs have check-marked the box in front of it, but there is no check-mark for this program, and when I click on the empty box it says "The list of applications is not available
Click on 'Reload' to load it. To reload the list you need a working internet connection. " I guess it means it's NOT installed, but I can't find a way to install it.

    Any ideas?

In order to install anything on Ubuntu, you need an internet connection, wired or not doesn't matter. Once you are connected, you open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:

    sudo apt-get install brasero

This will install the program automatically. Alternatively, you can install programs via Synaptic by going to System > Administration > Synaptic, then opening a search box and searching for the program you want.

    guyserbun007@guyserbun007-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install brasero
    [sudo] password for guyserbun007:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package brasero
    guyserbun007@guyserbun007-laptop:~$

Tried both methods, it oddly says that the brasero program is not available/found.

Am I missing something, if the internet is not connected then how can I post in this forum?

I have downloaded the installer package, but many of them contain "wrong architect", and for those I am able to open, I cant locate the exe file.

But can it burn bootable cd? And I have searched for this under applications, but I can't find this jane dvd creator you speak of.

Ubuntu should come with Brasero pre-installed, even if you don't have a CD burner.

Apparently, I guess I am the only one who doesn't have this pre-installed

"Canonical Ltd. provides technical support and security updates for Brasero Disc Burning Application
Brasero Disc Burning Application cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type."

    Any alternative to Brasero?

If you're not going to nuke the Ubuntu system anyway, you can install k3b.

Am I doing it right? I click on Applications > Add/Remove > Find the programs you speak of > Click on it > (but it said it couldn't be installed)

Which version of Ubuntu did you install, x86 or x64? I can't fathom why nothing would be available for i386 - everything is available for that platform! It seems you somehow have the wrong package list for your architecture...try doing sudo apt-get update, though I'm sure you have.

OK, I think I have it figured out, I go to Applications > Add/remove > Preference > then I check-marked all underneath "downloadable from internet" > Install the desired prog.

It's not that bad afterall, I think I will spend some time and see if I can get used to it.
