I heard about this before, I find it pretty useless because it's easier to install it with a CD.
-
perhaps for notebooks without a CD drive..

Well, I don't know how good this specific set of instructions is but installing without a CD is definitely useful. I've had to install Ubuntu on machines that had CD drives but had BIOSes which were too old to boot from the CD drive. I've also put together a NAS earlier this summer which by design has no CD drive. The preferred way to install Ubuntu on that machine is by booting from a USB stick.
The instructions I recommend using for installing Ubuntu are those provided on the community Wiki:

Let me clarify, I find it useless personally. It's good to have but I don't really need it.

It also saves you from having to waste CDs, or having to rely on CD-RW's, which frequently have burn errors (at least for me).
-
although all my laptops have a cd drive, i would still not use this method if i didn't have a cd drive. doing a network install is really cumbersome and not really efficient. i could pull my drive and put it in a box that had a cd drive and start the install before you could finish reading that web link.

I would not buy a notebook without a CD Drive

CD-RW's? They're known for being bad, use a CD-R. I bought about 50 at Office Depot for about 12 USD some time ago. If money is an issue then I can understand.
