Hi.
Have been a gentoo user for about 3 years. Going to post my success stories with a line of IBM TPs.
Thinkpads are seriously the best linux laptops out there. No issues with ACPI(unlike certain Dells), Volume, Hardware etc.
1) IBM T20 (Kororaa/Gentoo) - Current notebook for linux development.
Graphics (S3-Savage IX8) - Detected by Xorg-6.8 and Xorg-Modular 7.0
Trackpoint - Works by default
FN Buttons - Work by default
Vol Buttons - Since they are hardware wired, they work regardless of distro
LAN (Intel Pro 100+) - uses e100 module in the kernel
56K (havent tried)
2) IBM A31p (Gentoo) - Former development notebook.
Graphics (ATi 7500 32Mb) - Detected by Xorg-6.8/7.0. Too old a card for fglrx. However you do get 3D support with xorg DRI drivers
Trackpoint - Works by default
FN Buttons - Work by default
Vol Buttons - Since they are hardware wired, they work regardless of distro
LAN (Intel Pro 100+) - uses e100 module in the kernel
56K (havent tried)
Post your TP config with the distro like i have above.

Unbuntu works great right out of the box on my T42.
