    Hey guys

I have actually been running ubuntu 10 on my desktop for about a year (since it came out)... but I've been thinking of installing it on my laptop (which I have now done... love you wubi!)

But a bit of a problem for me is that I have a large music library in itunes and I was wondering what would be the best way of going about importing my library into ubuntu...

If any one has any experience, please tell!

What music player are you using with Ubuntu? I recommend Banshee. It has an "import itunes .xml" option under file>import playlist.
    1) Mount your windows partition (Called OS or in /host)
    2) In banshee, import itunes .xml
    3) Navigate to your Documents/Music/iTunes folder in your windows partition
    4) Choose whether to import ratings / playlists / etc
    5) Done!

Rhythmbox makes it a little more difficult. It is the default player installed in 10.04. Simply install banshee in the software center, as well as the banshee-extension-appindicator in order to replace the Rhythmbox indicator on your gnome panel.

Yeah, banshee seems like the easiest option.

Rhythmbox seems to require a script: Import iTunes Library into Rhythmbox (Ratings and Playcounts included) | Nathan Jamin’s Weblog

There's another tool to convert podcast subscriptions to rss feeds that you can then import: How to Import iTunes Podcasts in Rhythmbox

It's surprising there's no plugin for itunes conversion, here's the "official" list: https://live.gnome.org/RhythmboxPlugins/ThirdParty

I had an ipod a long time ago, and when I got rid of my powerbook I just dumped my itunes library folder onto an external disk. It's easy to navigate even if you never bother to import the metadata into any app.

    Hey guys

thanks for the replies. Yeah banshee worked pretty well, the last time I tried it (1.7 I think?) the import from Itunes was non-functional, but in the latest version it worked pretty well. It still couldn't locate some songs, had to add them manually (a pain) but who said everything should be easy right? :D
