    Soo...

I've used the Ubuntu repo provided ATI drivers from the "Additional Drivers" section under Admin. With both drivers (basic or repo alternative) I have major screen tearing all over the place. So I "deactivate" the drivers and it deleted Catylyst from the Prefs menu. So I looked up how to install the latest ATI driver (11.6) from here. I've tried down to installing debs. Past that none of the commands are recognized. "fglrxinfo" isn't recognized, and neither is "aticonfig". I can't proceed past installing the debs.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :)

Secondly, if I can get the same Gnome desktop as 10.10 on 11.04, I could just upgrade... But last time I installed 11.04, I HATED the interface. Within 30 minutes I was down to 10.10.

If you want the Gnome 2.32 desktop on Ubuntu 11.04 , all it takes is

System Settings > Login Screen > Unlock > Enter Password > Select: Ubuntu Classic and then restart. It's that simple.

Interesting. I almost had a fit when I saw that mess of a thing called a UI on 11.04. It immediately turned me off...

I can try that though. Thanks!

Are you trying to install the open source ATI drivers or the properietary one ? By the 11.6 drivers I believe you're talking about the proprietary driver.

If properietary I believe Ubuntu has some one-click installer for that as well.... If not or that is not the latest driver that you'd like to try - you can download it from the ATI website of course. AMD Graphics Drivers & Software ? Download the latest drivers for your graphics products

    The steps are quite simple:
    1. Uninstall any previous drivers
    2. From a terminal run "sh ./my_downloaded_installer.sh" (Replacing the installer script of course)
    3. The installer GUI should start up and it will guide you through. A restart of X11 might be required for the new driver to load.

The release notes on the same webpage should also tell in detail about the steps (the last ATI driver I installed was more than a year back.).

Also dont forget with every kernel version update you'd need to rebuild the kernel module i.e the driver using the new kernel header files, otherwsie your graphics driver will not load on bootup.

The steps for nvidia drivers are more or less similar except nvidia provides a text mode installer (which is much more easy and safer) that you need to run in runlevel 3.

    Thanks for the help, guys!

With the Gnome Classic desktop and the 11.6 proprietary ATI driver installed, everything is working exactly how I want it!

    +rep to you both.
