    I'm about to install Ubuntu Feisty. However I want to install GRUB on a differ location than the MBR.

    I remember being successful doing so with Edgy. But this was by luck and was never able to do so again without the install process crashing. Sucks because the crash is always at the ending of install. I wish there was a way to test it without before install process.

    I would like to install on the same partition as Ubuntu will be installed on.

    ... so is your question HOW you'd go about doing so?

    it just depends on which partition you install Ubuntu on. If you have it set up as
    hda1 -> Windows
    hda2 -> Ubuntu

    then install GRUB to (hd0,1) where hd0 is your first (or only) hard drive and "1" is the second partition; (hd0,0) would be your first partition... thus your MBR

    My first question would be, what reason do you have to not install GRUB on the MBR?

    Though, during the install setup, on the confirmation screen, just before you click install, you can click on the "hda ?,?" button to change where to install it, I believe.

    THANKS, I got GRUB installed on (hd0,2) and everything works fine.

    I don't like GRUB as my main bootloader. I use GAG as my main bootloader. And I'm able to use GAG to Enter GRUB when I need to boot linux. I'm able to use GAG to boot Windows without using GRUB. Plus GAG has the nice Interface and Options that are easy to edit. Loading GRUB to the main MBR overwrites GAG and Vice Versa.

    Huh. I've always found that the /boot/grub/menu.lst file was pretty straightforward in Linux. Oh well :) You might not even need Grub installed with that GAG loader, but I'm glad it's working for you.
