Is there anyway to install gnome on a command line Ubuntu system without using sudo aptitude ubntu-desktop. I'd like to have a clean Gnome desktop (to customize), without all of Ubuntu's stuff.

No, I think its this, I've done some searching over at the ubuntu forums.
