Someone I know might want to install one of those Linux OS's on their computer, and I might do it for them. How does it work to install it? It won't mess up getting into Windows right? That would be horrible..my freind just wants to try it out. Thanks.

I'm not sure about Mandriva's install process, but I know Ubuntu/Kubuntu won't mess up your Windows install.

Ok, thanks. I just want to make sure. So when you have both Ubuntu/XP on a computer, when you boot up, what happens, you select which one you want to use, or?

What happens is that you will boot to a grub screen which is basically a black screen with a list of all the OS' you have on your comp. From the grub you just scroll down to the OS you want to boot into and hit enter.

Ok, that's easy. Does Ubuntu have the 3-D Desktop..like can you make it look fancy easily? I've seen videos, etc of Ubuntu that made it look really cool!

Also, worse comes to worse you could reload Windows via the Recovery disks if something got messed up.

1.) It looks pretty plain out of the box, a bit Mac OSish; however, beryl and other programs exist which can dress up your install a bit.
2.) You should just be able to remove the Linux partition(s) and grow your Windows partition if you want to remove. At that point you'd have to repair the MBR probably using the Windows recovery console.

Grub comes with splash image now. But not in Ubuntu.
