When I try to install ubuntu in windows virtual pc the virtual machine crashes before reaching the desktop.
If I use the vga=791 noreplace-paravirt command, it does something and stops at the command prompt without reaching the GUI.

Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on Windows virtual PC?

What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log tell you about the crashed x-server?

Virtual PC is specifically designed for windows - and only that. It's not a general purpose VM progeny. Why can't you just use Virtualbox or similar?

If I remember correctly there were some virtual pc addons for redhat that you could use with alien on deb-based distros. Not sure if they're up to date anymore.

In any event, post your logs and maybe there will be a clue.

Honestly I would run virtualbox from sun. Free and stable. I run a windows 7 VM on my unbuntu and before I completely switched I ran a linux server on a virtualbox VM that I used for encrypted access to the host machine running win 7 ultimate.

Basically what I was thinking. I have 3 MS virtual PC setups at work and besides the windows design Im not too impressed with hardware support from the host machine.

[nitpicker]If you see it this way it's oracle/sun/innotek[/nitpicker]

Well, MySQL, OpenSolaris, OpenOffice. The only question is if Java or VirtualBox will be the next.

The problem with virtualbox is that its stuck at 800x600 resolution...is there a fix for that?

I can adjust the resolution to whatever I want in my windows VM and I can also go to full screen mode if need be. If youre using CLI then 800x600 is more then enough, if usin g a gui adjust the resolution in the hosted OS and it will adjust the window size too.

Maybe you need to install the virtualbox guest additions?

    Hi,
you need to install 'Guest Additions' into your guest OS, this will install better VGA driver, etc etc ... the you'll be able to change resolution at will.

You should be able to download / install automatically (devices-> install guest additions), or download / install by hand.
