So I notice that the new Sony NW that just came out will get the same instant Linux as the P-series has. I like the idea of an instant on Linux and I played with the one on the P and I liked it. Therefore, I have a few questions. Is there anyone who has the Sony instant on OS working on the TT(or any other Vaio that didn't come with it)? If so how can I do it, and where can I get the software from? If not, I know a few companies make instant OS that should work on many computers(not just netbooks). I know there is like Phoenix tech instant OS, is any good? Or what about Moblin? Unless not an instant linux? I just want to know what would be the best instant linux that would work best with the TT(and have most things working out the box with out much work done)? Thank you.

Isnt 'instant on' Linux more a firmware thing? (could be wrong of course
)
Moblin was designed for the Atom CPU primarily and getting it to work with anything else is going to be up to you.
I had Ubuntu booting in less that 20 seconds using EXT4 on my TT. It was darn fast...and easy to setup.
The biggest problem with the TT and any distro is the Fn and hardware keys and getting them to work under the current 2.6.28-13 kernel. Although you only require an installation of a modded sony-laptop kernel module - no biggie...besides the 2.6.30 kernel coming up in Karmic Koala already has the new sony-laptop module and there will be no more patching.
The only thing I could not get to work on the Vaio TT was the in-built microphone, but an external mic works no worries.
In the link to my blog in my sig block I have a post there about Ubuntu and the Vaio TT and a how-to to get it all running if thats any help.

Well I notice that Splashtop instant os is working on the Sony NW. You think there might be a way to get it working on the TT also? I like ubuntu as I currently run it on my HP(their version) but I kind of want something lighter and possibly quicker(under 15secs) if possible.

anyone else? please?

I'm pretty sure that distributions like Splashtop are modified by the manufacturers in order to provide tight integration with specific models such as the VAIO NW you mentioned. You can try installing it yourself (the documentation is out there), but it is likely that certain functions will not work.
-
Well I thought I read splashtop was bring out a version designed for all computers and such. I would think the NW version may work easier seeing as it might have some of the same specs(better gpu, larger screen) as my computer?
-
No, they don't seem to have a single build for all manufacturers. It seems to vary based on the motherboard and, thus, on the model itself.
How to get Splashtop
As you can see, it is sold as a bundle with specific models. This is done for both profit (the developers charge the manufacturers for this technology) and function (so the devs can customize it to work with specific models). -
What about hyperspace or coreboot os? You think those might work?
-
- you need to make sure your CPU has Intel VT (Virtual Technology), among other things. See the link for all requirements I provided at the bottom of the post.
- it is not clear whether you need a Phoenix BIOS to support this product

Requirements for both Hyperspace programs:

On the bright side, both products are available for trial purposes:

I think my cpu may support VT, but Sony disabled it(at least that what I hear about some of the other Sony laptops), it has the Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 cpu. I meet all the specs for the dual its seems like and pretty much all for the hybrid(VT issue). So I have to see then. Does splashtop dual boot or is it a hybrid mode os?
Thanks.
EDIT: I guess I can do with dual boot version, but I am not sure on a few things. I would like to know how fast it is to load on average. Can I dual boot it with Windows 7, and how much space is being used? -
Correct - the VT is disabled on the TT 's range of CPU's - found that out running virtual machines as you cannot run say a 64bit guest in a 32bit host...
As I said when you have an OS booting in under 30 seconds anyways whats the urgency for 'instant on'?
Sorry I don't understand what you are trying to achieve other than a few seconds saved?
The boot time I get for Ubuntu with a Vaio TT is around the 30 second mark (using EXT4 filesystem) - how this is now suddenly too slow I will never know.... -
The SUXXX processors do support VT-X http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx I know as well that FenderP traded their Sony Z for a Toshiba R600 because they wanted VT support and the R600 has the same processor that the TT uses.
-
Hmm only if we can figure out a way to enable it, then it be what I am looking for and go with the hybrid setup. To be honest for some reason I just dont want to run ubuntu as a second os, as to me I rather have it as my main and only os on the computer.

I thought I read somewhere some of the TZ and TT models came with an instant os on it. No?

jackluo923 Notebook Virtuoso
Why not get "instant on" windows? Just put your computer to sleep when turning it on. Then when you turn on ther computer, the OS will "boot" in less than 1 second.
-
Dunno kind of would like a linux os.
-
So, I finally got VT enabled via a bios update that was recently released, and I am interested in trying out the HyperSpace Hybrid Linux. Anyone try it out? Can it even work with my Vaio TT? Then again it seems a bit pricey at 60 bucks a year.
Any other options?
