Anyone else have problems with their 4500MHD integrated graphics not quite working well with Ubuntu 64bit? I have a E6400 and the resource usage can get pretty bad and I have traced it back to Xorg command. I'm using 9.04.

I've heard of such a thing, and there is a fix for it but can't remember where I saw it. I'll post it if I find it. Some others here will know though.
-
I tried the fixes noted in the release notes but none of them worked (they actually screwed up my install). So now I'm thinking of trying out PCLinuxOS or Mandriva.
-
Mandriva has been my best Linux experience so far, so i'd say go for it. Haven't used PCLOS, but i don't like the name. Remember they were trying to get attention by calling it Lindows, till MS sued them
-
Unfortunately, Mandriva is sucking up resources as well. I dunno what the problem is. Maybe the Intel Linux drivers in general just suck. I'm dl'ing Karmic Alpha 6 right now to try the newer drivers.

If the xorg config has a line reading UXA, change it to EXA and it may improve performance. For now.
If you're using EXA you might try UXA and see if it helps things -- it can go either way it seems (depending on your distro). -
Just booted up a live cd of Karmic Alpha 6 and the resource usage is about half of what it was. Everything seems to be working smoother. I'm doing a install onto my HDD now and i'lll see how it performs then.
I also downloaded the RC1 of Mandriva 2010. I think I should give that a try as well.
I was under the assumption that Linux performed extremely fast on modern machines, but from my experience Linux runs a bit slow to alot slower than Windows 7 enterprise.
I've go ta p8700, 3gigs of ram and 4500MHD graphics. -
Slower in what way?
-
It just seems like there is a delay with every action. Such as switching between tabs, opening up apps, etc. Most of my experience has been in Web browsing and desktop effects.
Another update: I'm on the hard drive booted 9.10 Alpha 6 and I'm happy to report much improved performance. glxgears gives me 2000+fps now versus the paltry 800-900fps I got withe 9.04. Now if only I can get Flash to work... -
Rejoice, for I have the answers.

Thanks! The second link will help the most.
The first link...well since I'm on Karmic alpha now, it will help if I decide to go back to Jaunty. Thanks though!
Now this is a, perhaps, not on topic question, but if I wanted to sometime down the road upgrade to 9.10 Karmic stable, would I just desginate the "/" partition for installation and let ubuntu handle it? Or is there a specific method for upgrading?
I have a / partition and a /home partition. Both are logical and in ext4.
Thanks. -
Yeah, but make sure to show the hidden files in your home partition and delete all the settings and settings folders in there too. It might cause problems down the road.

I'm pretty sure doing a dist upgrade would be easier than just formatting the \ partition and installing karmic final in it.
