I was considering buying HP dv6-2190us laptop computer, my only concern is that I am not sure if it is compatible with redhat's linux OS, enterprise 3. Does anyone have any idea?

    Hi,
one question - why you wanna use RHEL version 3? There is already RHEL 5.4 and 6.0 comming in 3rdQ this year.
RHEL 3 uses 2.4.21.x kernel version and that means you're gonna be stuck in world full of prehistoric dinosaurusses.
I highly doubt you're gonna get everything up working on this laptop of yours, except only if you know exactly what you're doing, and maybe not even then.

    Hi, Sir.

Why I stuck to enterprise 3 is because my linux applications are old, they can't work under new OS, like 5.4 unfortunately. They can work under enterprise 4, however enterprise 3 is prefered for those linux applications. thank you for your response.

I think it would be nearly impossible to find a new laptop that is compatible with Red Hat enterprise3.

My suggestion would be stuff like virtual box and vmware.

I'm no expert on red hat though.

I second what guitarplayer said. If you get through the installation at all, tons of stuff won't work (I think the probability the wireless will work is close to 0% but I bet you would have more severe problems than that).

However, the dv6-2190us is a pretty powerful laptop, you will get decent performance for RHEL 3 in a VM. I guess what might slow things down a bit is the hard drive. Go for an SSD if you have the cash.

But by all means, save yourself a lot of headaches and install it in a VM.

In this case, as guys already said, install RHEL/CentOS 5.4 (or any other distro of choice as the host system - just make sure it's 64bit, or even install windows, if you will)
Then VirtualBox from Sun (Oracle), or VMware and RHEL 3 as the "guest" system running as virtual machine.
And then you'll have no problems to run desired app, and at the same enjoy your laptop HW.

Thank you guys, based on your replys, installing VM is the solution for me. Thank you very much!

Everyone else answered your questions appropriately, I however wanted to add my (negative) experience with the DV6-2190us.

I purchased two dv6-2190us model laptops from HP. They come default with Windows 7. But no matter how hard I try I can't seem to get anything other than 7 to boot.

I've tried Konppix 5.1.1 (cd) and I get a 'black' screen after the 'Welcome' screen.
-Tried Different screen resolutions and hsyncs etc (black screen)
    -Tried Runlevel 2 (black screen)
-Debug mode displayed a few errors (ACPI error) but the PC 'stopped' at PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus FF)

    Puppy v3
    -Stopped after kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10

    OpenSUSE Live (KDE) - 0577 - x64 & x86
-Stopped at 'Mounting live boot drive...'
-Removed the Hard Drive and tried again (same prompt).

    BartPE
-Crashed BSoD at Loading 'Windows XP' screen.

    WinXP Pro:
Fresh install of XP crashes with BSoD after the 'Press F6 to add additional drivers'. (Can't get to any Windows Recovery screen).

Put a SysPreped XP Ghost install on the hard drive and tried booting from it. (BSoD).

Contacted HP and they don't support Linux (no surprise) or XP Downgrade.

I did get a tech who asked if I had tried the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager drivers. I couldn't F6 to get them loaded so I slip streamed my XP SP3 Disk with the drivers included, but it BSoD as well.

The BIOS is a very stripped down. Its a InsydeH20 and can't really disable anything. It also shows 'Factory Installed OS' as Win 7.

Basically I don't recommend this laptop for Linux.

    UPDATE:
After doing some detective work I found the some Intel Drivers that did work for Windows XP Pro SP3.
    I slipstreamed these x32 drivers:
32-bit Intel® RST Driver Files for F6 Install

So it IS possible to downgrade to XP. I suppose BartPE will work as well with these drivers. (No thanks to HP).

As for Linux here is a little blurb about which kernel versions have the driver.
    Code:
Beginning with Linux* kernel version 2.6.18*, the dmraid* utility 1.0.0-rc15 supports RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10.

Beginning with Linux kernel version 2.6.27*, the mdadm* utility 3.0 supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, and RAID 5.

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology — Is there Linux* support for Intel® RAID controller hubs?

I didn't dig too deep but OpenSUSE 11.2 uses Linux kernel 2.6.31.5. I wounder if the Kiwi LiveCD 0577 uses the same build?

Perhaps you should try Red Hat 5.5?
