I've been following it and on their website they had the canonical scheduled release for the end of this month along with a countdown meter. It's no longer there and the release date is gone.
Also do you guys think this Vostro V13 will handle 10.4? I'm still a noob when it comes to Linux.![]()

should be fine with NBR 10.04. I don't know if they are still on schedule, I stopped checking in after the RC yet again doesn't even boot in my DVD drive/ USB stick. they ruined support for the 5xxx series of cards in the first beta and haven't fixed it since, if its not fixed by release I'm heading to fedora myself.

What the difference between Fedora and Ubuntu?
I looked up Fedora and like the GUI. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_12_tour
I see Fedora 13 is coming out in 22 days: http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora -
@EIement
Have you tried beta2? I'm using a 5870HD and it is working fine with the proprietary ati drivers provided by ubuntu restricted driver manager. -
They were on schedule as of last night...
-
-
I expect Fedora would work too.
2 days to *buntu 10.04. Anyone know what time the release is due? -
If you go by the Ubuntu forums, they don't seem to be on schedule!
If you don't like the most recent Ubuntu or have problems with it, what makes you think switching to Fedora will be much better? I'm a Fedora fan but if you mean you'll switch to Fedora 13, that will be constantly changing too.
It will probably take the Ubuntu devs a month at least to iron out all the bugs or issues to get things relatively working well.
Any issues with the HD 5000 cards in Ubuntu is not Ubuntu's fault totally as ATI must share some blame (being generous). ATI/AMD's site even states that Ubuntu is one of the three distros supported so any problems can be attributed to their shoddy and really slow support.
The binary drivers work? News to me. There's so many variables, kernel version, xorg version etc.... so, which combo works then? -

it is purely ubuntu's fault as they removed files that are needed for it to work, check the launchpad reports. -
As for the look, you can install any user interface on any distribution. It's just entirely up to the developers what interface they decide to use by default. Ubuntu uses Gnome by default, which is garbage IMO, especially the newest version included in 10.04. I use kubuntu (it's just ubuntu with KDE desktop instead of gnome). But you can install any distribution and then install any manager on top of that. The most common are KDE, gnome, XFCE, fluxbox, and a couple others that I can't think of.
Also, if you're having problems installing/using ubuntu, you're going to have a lot more problems with any other distro. Ubuntu is by far the most user friendly. (This is ignoring any specific hardware issues that ubuntu may not like. But in general. Ubuntu is the easiest) -
I have tried Beta2 and the RC and so far I am very satisfied. It was 9.10 that I had problems with. 9.04 has been rock-solid for me, and 10.04 RC has been 99% as good on my test machine. Boot times are phenomenal! I am sure the servers will be jammed this weekend!

Today is the day!
-
I wonder if 10.04 won't put my laptop into standby when I unplug it or plug it in. As long as it runs well on my netbook I'll be happy. I really hope they don't screw it up.
I have been using Ubuntu casually since 2008 and seriously for the past year now - as far as I'm concerned it is farther ahead, as a desktop OS, than the other distros. Ubuntu is the farthest along and CentOs is probably the farthest back.
If it's out today I'll have to download it -
Woot, if it's out today i'll try it as well.
-
what time does it come out?
-
There appear to be some last minute problems. And desperate early installers are hitting the servers like a ddos attack.... Even downloading the torrent file looks like being a problem.
Thank goodness I put the RC on last night. It's a beaut. Even truecrypt seems to work!!
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IncidentReports/2010-04-29-Late-respin-for-bug-570765
Now i thought a respin took at least a day. Perhaps something less radical can be done. Trouble is, so many folk are asking when it will be available, it's impossible to work out what's going on. -
well ubuntu is completely out of my book for now. still no go for booting from the live CD/USB stick w/ the "final proposed image". Leaving 6,000,000+ potential users in the dark isn't exactly the best move.
-
Sorry, I'd forgotten just how many people can't get it to work at the moment. It seems that if it works, it works really well, or it doesn't work at all. I'm surprised they haven't fixed these problems yet. Bit shambolic.
Last official thing I read was from the QA team talking about a 48hour delay (10.05!), but 'people' are saying that the release will be later this evening. Normally I don't care about all this stuff, but lucid has caught my imagination.
It's 4:20pm now, so they've not got long if they want to hit the 29th and the footie starts at 8! -

But where they is it's a bit later, now 5:10pm
It's relevant 'cos a lot of people involved with the release are supposed to fly out this evening/tomorrow.
I've given up watching now. I'll stick with the RC for the moment -
I'm just hoping that there will be a miraculous bug fix/driver support for Intel HD graphics...y'know, considering just how many i5/i7 processors there are and everything.
-
While the aforementioned dual-booting bug has been fixed, it's gonna take a bit before the new build reaches all servers. It will prolly take until tomorrow for at least as subset of the forum readers.
-
I got a upgrade prompt today from within Kubuntu 9.10, I hit "No" since the website only says that the RC release is out and I didn't feel like downloading if it would just be the RC bits.
-
It looks like 10.04 is out.
-
updating as we speak
-
I'm downloading it now
-
It's a slow download. I'm on 20Mbps download and it's taking forever. Suppose everyone and their mum is doing the same.

FarmersDaughter Notebook Consultant
Waiting until at least May 24 or when schools out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this time everything will work. I'm giving them almost a month to iron things out... it better be good! Anybody know if the lappy in my sig will be an issue?
-
Yup, and it will be like that for a few days. If you use bit torrent it will be much quicker.... Probably inside of 20 mins.
-
OK,So I got 10.04 installed and running(Comcast 20mbs!,1300Kbs average),also all set up for me,I like most of the UI changes and the Video editor...
To fix the title bar buttons being in the left do this:
Press Alt-F2
Type in: "gconf-editor"
Click on "apps"
Click on "metacity"
Click on "General"
Click on the field for "button_layout"
Move the ":" from the End to the Beginning of the String
(From this: ) “close,maximize,minimize:”
(To this: ) ”:close,maximize,minimize”
(Also if you want close on the end: (like windows) ) :minimize, maximize, close
Press Enter.
That was easy -
My observation from a Ex-MCP chipset user on Linux. -
-
I like to use:
menu:minimize,maximize,close
That adds a convenient button in the top left corner to move workspaces, always on top, and other things. -
-
I tried 10.04 out a bit. Didn't like it too much. Not because of the buttons or the themes or whatever. I try to like every release... but I'm just too converted to Arch. That said, for a distro to introduce people to the Linux world, this release is fantastic. I just wonder why they decided to move the buttons in an LTS and not a normal release.
-
I'm not sure what happened, but I can't even get it to boot. I installed from a USB flash drive to a SDHC, like I have been doing for the past year.
I can NOT boot to the SDHC card. The only way the computer will boot is if I insert the 4gb flash drive, select that in the boot menu. Then it will boot to the SDHC.
Seems like it got /dev/sda and /dev/sdb confused. Not even sure where to start on fixing this one ... -
I think other people have reported about booting and installing from a usb drive. Why don't you try it with the Live CD. Report the incident to Bugzilla or something

Thanks !
The closest I found on the net to usb-creator was LiLi USB Creator but it said it was incompatible with Ubuntu 10.4 or am I doing something totally wrong?
I looked on my created disk and I couldn't find it there either. Do you have a direct link? -
Figured out my problem. When it got to the last stage of options for install I had to select which drive to install the bootloader to. Where the previous installs of Ubuntu defaulted to the drive where the OS was installed, 10.04 defaulted to /dev/sda
Is Ubuntu 10.4 on schedule?
