Hi, has anyone tried KDE 4 ? For the first time, Linux just completely froze on me and I had to reset my laptop. Applying visual preference just crash KDE 4 and it happened 3 times so far. I have no such problems with Gnome. Anyone else have problems with KDE 4 or it's just something I'm doing wrong ?

Well, even the developers admit this isn't quite a final version. It's more of a beta (or RC) if you ask me. Reading some comments on DistroWatch made me think about it like this. Give it a rest, it was never supposed to be anything more than a technological demo.

The developers have done a great job with KDE 4, but there are still a lot of bugs and it is very new. If you want something stable stick with the latest 3x series of KDE like 3.5.8 etc. KDE4 would be used best in a non critical situation at the moment. You could beta test it and report bugs which would definetly help the developers.

The KDE 4.0.0 release isn't exactly fit for daily use by the average user. I'm going to stick with KDE 3.5.* until KDE 4.1.0 is released in July (I think - it's somewhere around there) 2008. 4.0.0 is more of a preview release that's meant to stir up interest in the software. They are building KDE4 from the bottom up with a enormous number of frameworks that will make KDE much more modular and portable in the long run by abstracting away common features in different programs, allowing this series of KDE to last for a very long time. Check out this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6642148224800885420 . It's pretty long, but fascinating - I watched it all ;p

Pretty interesting video....what worries me about linux is hardware drivers, the lack of which could bring down linux...but that's another thread. Thanks for the link!

It's a developer release, so that programs can be ported over and tested, don't use it on your main machine.

If it was me, I'd wait for a complete distro with KDE 4 integrated. The next Kubuntu release, due out in a few months, should be running 4.

Yes, I am sticking with KDE 3.x for now. And so is Linus:

"What do you think of KDE 4?

I haven't used it myself yet, I am a KDE user but that's one area where I don't want to be on the leading edge. I actually used to send in my bug reports and stuff like that but I haven't had the time to really make that jump. I think I will probably wait for 4.1 or something when some of the initial issues have been smoothed out."
