Ok so I installed xfce on my ubuntu server right before Im going to install debian to test it out and right off the bat I love it! I could definitely see this UI replacing gnome for me.

Yeah the only real gripe I have is that xfce doesn't have desktop icon previews.

Besides that .... hm I can't think of any *major* complaints. ;)

I've yet to give up gnome-power-manager and I'm using the gnome-panel stuff for temps and cpu frequency. I'm using it as a weird hybrid of gnome and xfce at this point, I have to admit.

I do love gnome-power-manager. As for previews, well thats apparently not a deal breaker for me as I didnt even think about it until you pointed it out. At this point Im more concerned with the transition from my x200s back to my t400, but that means fresh squeeze and xfce on the t400. :D

Currently using KDE. I loooove Gnome Shell! Gnome 3 overall isn't very power-user friendly, but Shell (and the upcoming extensions) is amazing!

To everyone who's trying out KDE, Arch has good packages, and a lot of Arch devs contribute to KDE and Qt themselves. Arch may be hard to pickup, but after the high learning curve it becomes very easy to do what you want.

Gnome 3 is catering to the dumbed down users who only want and need basic functionality. Im convinced thats the route they will continue on hence why im trying new UIs out. One day Ill try out arch on a vm but for now its all about xfce and getting it right with squeeze.

Arch has one of the best How Tos among all the major linux Distros. It's almost like hand-holding its users.

agreed. im more than happy with Gnome 2.3 and dont really feel the need to switch to Gnome 3. the only thing i really like about it is the looks, but it definitely felt dumbed down.
i still have yet to try KDE, but im definitely gonna test it out soon. proabably when it's 100% stable in Fedora 15

Yeah 2.3 is great. I went back to gnome on the server at home due to xfce being unstable on the current setup. I also went back to 2.3 gnome on my thinkpad due to some issues with volume buttons and ultranav issues. But I'm going to make a sandbox xfce squeeze vm to mess around and get things straight, but for now I just need things to work right and I'm tired of reformatting and I need to get back to work.

@Sphinx What was the instability with xfce? Were you using it on Squeeze?

I'm running it on sid with no problems... but I turned a friend on to it and they are complaining to me about icons doing weird things and desktop clicks being delayed. :p

I love XFCE, but the lack of a volume OSD and a volume applet for PulseAudio is anooying.

obmixer and xfce4-volumed solve that though :D

The instability is with ubuntu. Whenever I use an xfce session it will freeze the server when the screen saver starts.

As for my thinkpad there are some OSD issues and multimedia buttons that dont work in xfce but work natively in gnome. Gnome 2.3 isnt bad, and I definitely like xfce but I got really busy and I needed to switch to gnome for functionality. When I get time Ill setup xfce right as the interface is pretty nice.

I just switched back to gnome 2 for now. xfce crashed really hard from a bad flash applet and it took down the entire gdm3 session. When i logged back in i was greeted with a blank panel and just a mouse cursor. My .config/xfce4 folder got trashed, so I rebooted and did an fsck. The same happened this time, except I couldn't even switch back to tty1, I had to ssh in and move my config folder out of the way.

If I go back to it I will have to remember to back up my settings folder (I back up my entire home folder on my desktop but this was my laptop). I can't be bothered to start from scratch right now with a default config. :(

Exactly where I was (not the problem, but situation of needing something stable). I was running on borrowed time and I needed to go to something stable fast. Gnome 2.30.2 with squeeze was it. Like I said I couldnt even leave my server for long during an XFCE session or it would freeze and crash.

Sorry to hear about your issues and happy gnome computing!
