Hey Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone here is using KDE 4 and what they think about it? I know there's a new Beta out today for 4.1, which when it's completed, is the version they're supposed to be really trying tp push out to end users. I noticed on there there's not a lot of general discussion on new developments/releases, etc. Thought it'd be good to start some conversation. There's a really cool new menu being developed for KDE 4 to replace Kickoff: http://www.raptor-menu.org/ I don't know if anyone here has heard of it though.

Its not ready for prime time....

That's pretty cool. I haven't used 4 yet....waiting on 4.1....thanks for the beta info.

If you look at the feature list of 4.1, I think you will agree that releasing KDE under the version number 4.0 was a mistake on the KDE development team's part; even if they explicitly said that 4.0 wasn't ready, why did they release it?

It'll be interesting to see what the distributions do with KDE 4. No one has really came out with a main distro fully based on KDE 4 right? Maybe Fedora? I was thinking maybe OpenSUSE 11 would be the first one. I like it when the different distros really do a lot of modifications/exclusive stuff to make it unique from the others. I think OpenSUSE does the most of that. I'm really looking forward to 11, as well as Mandriva's KDE 4 release. 11 in a dark theme would look really awesome! Those are probably my 2 favorite distros. There's SO many to choose from though! Lol. That Raptor menu is looking really cool. Definitely liking that, it's got a pretty awesome UI and great functionality. Hope it gets mature soon, maybe KDE will include it as a default menu sometime in the future.

I should try KDE one of these days...

They should have called it 4.0-alpha or 4.0-dev or something. The problem is that they had to get something out for external developers (people not properly part of the KDE development effort but who are producing software running on KDE) and it had to be consistent enough to be called a "release". They had to have some sort of consistent baseline against which the external developers could start producing software for KDE 4. Having a release allows everyone developing for KDE 4 to talk about the same thing instead of some moving target. They just should have named it differently. -
^^ Agreed.

Thing is, the .0 release is stable. It's just not feature-complete. That's how it's always been with KDE, the .0 release is where none of the API or anything else will change, and it's safe to start developing applications and such to the API.
