Hi, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu I always get a Kernel Panic. The specific one that comes up is "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I'm using the most recent version of Ubuntu (6.10) I'm using it on an older laptop (Dell Inspirion 1150) if that matters. All the specs meet the requirements. I'm a linux noob so I need step by step instructions. I have never gotten to the desktop.

From the GRUB menu, there should be a command to edit the boot command. Could you please copy down every line that would be given when Ubuntu is chosen?
-
It says
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/hdc1 ro quiet splas>
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-10-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot
That is what the line says. -
Thanks for that. It may take me a bit to come back with an answer, but I'll try.
And, that "splas>" is actually a "splash", right?
EDIT: Also, did you update to Edgy from Dapper? And can you get into Ubuntu via recovery mode in GRUB? -
Yes. I never looked after the arrow.

Well, I can't find any mention of boot problems with your particular laptop. The only thing I can think of is accessing the recovery terminal, if possible, and doing a sudo apt-get upgrade, and see if booting the very latest kernel will work.
Other than that, perhaps another member here or over at www.ubuntuforums.org can help you out better than I can. -
Would booting into the livecd and getting the updated kernel and then installing it work?
-
If that is possible or not, I am unsure. Perhaps one of the other members here as had experience in this area. Again, I am sorry I can not be of further assistance.

Your note have a SATA IDE, don't? Yout system are trying to boot from a IDE drive...
Can you mount /dev/sda1 from a live CD?
