Burned the LiveCD ISO of Kubuntu's latest 6.10 release candidate. I wasn't expecing much, as linux on my previous vaio meant I couldn't use the Fn keys and so forth... there were specific projects running just to get Sony's power management working, and I wasn't quite prepared to lose those features on my new Vaio.

Anyways, LiveCD means that there's no commitment into booting it, so away it went. The result, in a word, wow.

Everything was flawless. Typically all the things that have been a little messy in my previous linux installs simply worked... power management , monitor resolution (1200x800), and fully functioning Fn keys (mute, volume, brightness)... worked as good as the Vaio original winXP install. It also picked up the dual core processor properly, which is also a typical config hassle.

The only things that I haven't tried out, because they'd be very long shots, is the webcam and the fingerprint reader.

I wasn't going to dual boot because I didn't want to lose the Fn keys on the new lappy, but, it looks like when Kubuntu get around to the full release I'm most definitely going to be dual booting.

Kubuntu/Ubuntu... give it a try on your lappy, it looks very promising straight up.

Does 6.10 detect a WiFi card and connect to existing signal w/o fiddling around?

Depends on your wireless card. Intels should be no problems, however there may be fiddling to get WPA working right.

yup, the card was configured, and the wifi tool found my unsecured network... but for some reason DHCP didn't fire properly. Had to manually put in the IP and gateway details. I wont rule out my network hardware as being the issue, I'm going to play with some options and see if it can't do it all flawlessly.

...but the detection and setup certainly was automagic. :)
