Well, at college im "used" to use Kurumin linux. You may now know it but its a very popular distro here at Brazil. Anyways. It uses KDE interface.

I'm getting my notebook (1520) soon, and i am definately putting Linux on it to get more used to it and useing it as my main OS, just dualbooting to Windows XP when i want to game. As a linux newbie, i looked for a newbiefriendly distro. Came up with Ubuntu. However i have tried it on the livecd and didnt exactly love the Gnome desktop. Then i searched a bit more and discovered the Kubuntu, which is supposed to be a Ubuntu with KDE.

Well, if you read all this or not, the thing is: Are Ubuntu and Kubuntu essentially the same? I mean, if i have some problem, can i go to an Ubuntu forum and follow everything and it should work?

Also need to say i'm pretty impressed with the Ubuntu 6.06LTS i tried here. Just booted it and everything went working, the fixes i had to do were easy and efficient. I'm sold :D

Yes, they are the same. In fact, you can install Ubuntu and if you don't like Gnome, (I can't stand it) a single command will install KDE for you
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
You should check out the thread at ubuntu forums that describes the issues with 7.10 and the Inspiron 1520.

    Hm, thanks for the reply.

I'm also interested in stuff like Kwrite/Kate and these kind of software that i like and am used to use at KDE. For what i've read, i belive Kubuntu comes with those. Does doing that apt-get include these software? Because if so, i don't see a point for Kubuntu anymore... Well i'm downloading it and will test soon and see if i like it. I also dont know if theres, for instance, something that would prevent me from installing stuff from KDE on a Gnome based.

As it's the same of Ubuntu to make stuff, i'm pretty sure thats the perfect distro for me now. :)

Yes, those apps are part of KDE.

No. Gnome and KDE are both desktop environments, in other words, just an extra collection of programs that run on top of Linux. You can even run KDE apps under the Gnome desktop and vice versa.

This is what makes Linux so versatile, everything is so modular. You can strip everything but the bare essentials and run it on a phone or router, you can have all kinds of database and server software without any desktop to slow it down, or have all the awesome graphics and productivity software that a normal user likes.

i've tried to download from the Kunbuntu pages, but this gives a http header error. I've started the torrent, but that's so slow.

I downloaded it easy from kubuntu.org
It was considerably quick, considering my 300k internet link. Just need to burn it now, i'll do it when i get at home.

However, the first mirror i tried didnt work, then i tried another one and it worked ok. Try choosing another mirror :)

Uh.. Well, i tried the Kubuntu 7.10.

However i didnt find software like.. Gimp, XMMS, Firefox, Gaim and stuff like this. I guess i can simply download them but aren't they supposed to come together?

Anyway, i runned it at my current AthlonXP/256RAM (yeh this buddy has grown ancient old) so wonder what, it was very slow, when i was first trying to download Gimp, looks like it crashed (have to consider i'm also running by livecd). It looked awesome anyways, but i dont see many different from an (very) old Kurumin (KDE) that i got, except that this one didnt bring even software like Firefox.

The thing is, shouldnt those software come on it? I downloaded the CD version. Should i download the DVD one to get those? Weird that i had them at some old Ubuntu 6.06 i got; and also i found a Kubuntu 7.10 review and Firefox, Gimp and stuff were listed as inside.

Sorry for bumping this and bothering once again :D

The best way to have access to all major programs you may want is to be sure that all repositories are enabled so the package manager is able to download everything required online
