What can I say? It's professional, sexy, and easy. Big difference between KDE 3, makes me almost a KDE person. I might be one for a while, It's slick. KDE 4.1 is just as stable as KDE 3.x(more even) and Gnome.

    What's everyone else think?

I think it's not ready yet. It lacks a lot of the customizability that I really take advantage of in KDE 3.5. KDE 4'll probably be ready enough for me to use at 4.3.

Meh, it's the customization I hated in KDE3, it just had too many ways to do the SAME thing, and it was cluttered.

    I love it aswell.

The guys did a really awesome job.

Have been using KDE4 since very early 4.0 and it's definately a huge improvement from 4.0 to 4.1.2 we have by now on Kubuntu 8.10.

I don't have any complaints about the customization on it...

The only thing i can think that can still be improved is KNetworkManager, which still bugs me sometimes. The rest, to me, are passable buggies that dont matter much and i dont have any issues with them...

Still, love it, won't look back ;)

I was a bit skeptical about KDE4.1 at first(bad experience with the pre-release version), but I love it now! It's very stable and I can customize it to fit all my needs.

Yep same here, I am not generally a KDE person, but 4.1 has made one out of me.

You're probably going to be disappointed with 4.2 or 4.3. The lack of features is not a design decision---the developers just haven't had enough time to add all the features from KDE 3.5 back in.

I installed KDE about a month ago, and I just can't stand navigating around it... I always switch back to GNOME or XFCE within a few minutes. I admittedly haven't given it a fair chance, though.

I tried Kubuntu 8.10 and I wasn't impressed at all. Not only was the interface confusing (ie. Terminal image for a group of icons Terminal isn't in) but it just seemed broken. Even Firefox straight off Adept didn't seem to run right and had graphics glitches.

I tried regular Ubuntu 8.10 afterwards and it ran much better. Still not going to win me over from Windows, but it might be something I'd recommend to people who don't need more than Web, email, and basic stuff.

So in your folks opinion, what major features is the current KDE 4 missing?

Well, I decided to try Kubuntu 8.10 AMD64 and so far it is awesome. It is fast, looks great, no crashes. I am pretty impressed. KDE 4 has come a long way from just the version that was released with 8.04(found it unusable). There is enough customization for me. What really impressed me was that the Nvidia driver and the flash plugin were so easy to install and with 64 bit no less. That was the easiest proprietary software install I have ever experienced. I will keep using it and see if I still like it in a month or so.

The hardest thing I have had to contend with is this whole new idea of widgits and how to get all my desktop links in one and stuff like that.

I've been skeptical about KDE's potential as a choice of personal desktop because of its excessive emphasis on the look and eye candy. But after the release of KDE4 this year, I'm actually looking forward to switching to it over Gnome. KDE4 was just.. I dunno... so much more than just a "make over." :)

Kubuntu 8.10 is good, but when you compare it to Ubuntu... well, lemme just say that I'll stick w/ Gnome tyvm....

KDE all the way for me. Has Kubuntu 8.10 fixed BT yet? I've been patiently waiting :D

Are you talking about Bluetooth? If so from what I read KDE4 still has problems with automatically getting bluetooth devices to hook up. But I used some command line commands and can get my bluetooth mouse to work perfectly with Kubuntu 8.10. I can tell you what I did if you need me to. I would ideally however like the mouse to pair with the machine upon boot automatically, but I am not quite sure how to do that.

Yes, BT. I know how to connect via command line...but I had problems doing that with 8.10. i.e. couldn't.

It does work. I do it everyday.

BTW - I will say again that KDE 4 is really nice. I didn't like the paradigm shift with the folder view but now that I have it set up it is really nice. It think it will actually help me from losing files when reinstalling etc. Wow, this is the easiest Linux install I have ever had. Today I will put it on the desktop and see how that goes.

No problem. I had to install one package to get the hidd command to exist. I forget the name of it but I can find out if you need help.

In adept type hidd for the package search. This will cause one of the bluetooth related packages to come up - bluz.... something. Install this package and you will have the hidd command available.

That is the same thing that is annoying me. I want my bluetooth mouse to connect automatically, with nothing done on my part, when the system boots. This is what happens in Vista, wish it would happen in Kubuntu 8.10. I tried to start up the Kde4 bluetooth service and nothing happens. Did automatic bluetooth connectivity ever work in any version of Kubuntu? If it works in 8.04 then I might have to downgrade for now till it is fixed.

My sound works fine for the most part except when the system boots and the welcome music plays it abruptly stops after a couple of seconds. Don't know why. My exit music plays perfectly.

the BT has worked automatically for me since Kubuntu 7.04....that's why I can't understand how they let it get hosed.... :(
