all of a sudden, my wireless card isn't turning on at login anymore...the wireless light on the laptop comes on during linux boot up, but goes out....BT is working fine though. Anyone have a clue to this?
Wireless does work as I was online initially.
-
Have you tried System>Administration>Hardware Drivers, and checking if it's enabled, or whatever it is in KDE?
EMZ=] -
Check your networkmanager, see if it's enabled in there.
-
what's your wireless card
This is most likely not a KDE 4 problem, btw -
It's an Intel 4965 a/g/n It's always been great with new Linux Distro's, especially the 'buntu's. I'm going to boot back in and look again...been to busy to really look at for very long...but it does go OFF right at about the time the login screen comes up. Before, on the liveCD and initially after the first install, I was online fine. Can't think of anything I've done to change something

Make sure your network manager is starting up. Wireless cards are configured from the GUI any more, so you need to make sure that you're starting the management apps. I have had some problems with KDE 4.1 "forgetting" settings, and this may just be how it's manifesting itself for you.

dude intel wireless has always had problems with gnome and kde
took me ages and tons of terminal codes to get it to work properly . but i hear the new ubuntu 8.1/new kubuntu fix all intel based issues -
rofl bAsem
anyway, try sudo echo iwl4965 >> /etc/modules
and then sudo modprobe iwl4965 should get it working without rebooting
Wait a minute... wireless is working? The only problem is the light? -
lol what u rofling bout .. i spill my suffering here and u laugh at it
just google intel 945 +ubuntu .. tons of pages would turn up -
945 is graphics, not wireless lol. Intel wireless cards have been working great in linux for quite awhile now.
-
ma bad i meant intel pro wireless 3945bg
and no it had a huge problem on hardy heron .. i know coz it gave me hell

They've made serious changes to the NetworkManager in 8.10. I have a friend who installed the beta and his ethernet connection would not work in a fresh installation unless he manually added "auto eth0" to /etc/network/interfaces. Somebody dropped the ball.
-
-
Heck, I can't get Ubuntu 8.10 beta to go online either !!! Maybe Mandriva 2009 Gnome will work!
EDIT: Heck no with Mandriva....I think my penguin brain has gone MUSH !! lol
PS: Adding Auto wlan0 to my etc/network/interfaces file in Kubuntu 8.10 beta brought up the available networks, but I couldn't connect to any of them. ??? I bet an update would fix that, but I don't have cable or sneakernet in this friggin' lousy hotel! -
You need to upgrade the hotel, then.

Ok...I'm downloading the RC of Kubuntu...I'll see if that cures my ills...pretty sure it will based on past history
-
I've the RC installed, now darned if I can't get Bluetooth working
Anyone else have this problem? I can't even get a bluetooth icon to appear on the panel

Is there by chance a 'hardware' switch somewhere? My Thinkpad has a so called hardware switch on the front, but it turns out it only sends an ACPI signal to the OS. There's also fn-f5 which has similar effects. In Windows the front switch acts like a kill switch, and fn-f5 brings up a menu to individually turn radios on/off. In Linux, depending on the distro and how acpid is setup, they can turn radios on or off rather unpredictably, and sometimes both need to be toggled just to get Bluetooth.
Maybe the Ubuntu devs have been messing with how they handle acpi events on Asus laptops.
