I've ended up with Linux Mint 6 x64 on this Precision as I was having problems starting up X with MEPIS 8 (as well as Zenwalk). So I'm getting used to Gnome again, but I have to say it's a very nice distro. Is it the Quadro FX770 that's been giving some distros the fits? Don't get it why the only thing I can get to go into X is a Ubuntu derivative. Any clues appreciated.

What does your dmesg say? How about /var/log/xorg.0.log? X will almost never fail without telling you why.

OK with MEPIS 8 x64, here is what I get after a 'startx':

(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) No Devices Detected
    Fatal Server Error:
    No server found
Waiting for x server to begin accepting connections Giving up
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): unable to connect to x server
xinit: no such process (errno 3) server error

I'd appreciate some help on this one. It will go into X with the VESA driver from the Grub menu

I got my machine partitioned now...I can put MEPIS to the harddrive, go in with the vesa driver, and see what I can do...it's Dell Hell I think...as much as I love this Precision :D or new hardware, dunno.... :D

Some folks on the MEPIS forum have pointed out a script to me in the MEPIS wiki to run and install the correct driver. On my Asus, it was no problem with a geforce go7700. Problem is, I'm starting to like Mint x64 ....it's running like a scalded dog on this m4400 lol
