So, i recently installed ubuntu 8.10 on my old laptop to fiddle around with it, and make it a media laptop, the only problem now, is that the headphone jack doesnt work when i plug my headphones in, the sound from the speakers cut off when the plug is inserted, but then nothing happens, the music is still playing, but the sound isnt coming out, can anyone help me?

Did you go into the volume control panel and make sure that the sound is turned up for the headphone jack?

I take it you only have one headphone jack? As suggested, you need to double click on the sound icon, and make sure all of those are correct. Also, you can go to System>Preferences>Sound and check your Devices.

Open up the sound mixer and see if headphones are muted, just as notyou said.

You could try leaving the headphones plugged in when you boot Ubuntu, and see if they are recognized then.

Also, your fix might be something along these lines. I have a feeling it has something to do with ALSA or some such configuration... :p
